In 1959, the government of Egypt was working on a plan to build a dam on the River Nile. It was called the Aswan Dam,  and it was intended to generate electricity and allow the river water to be used for agriculture. There was one big problem with the  plan, though. The dam would flood a nearby valley that contained ancient Egyptian treasures, including two enormous stone  temples. It can be difficult for governments to choose culture and history over economics. However, if countries always made  decisions like this, the majority of the world's ancient sites would end up being destroyed. Luckily, UNESCO stepped in. They   formed a committee that tried to convince Egypt to protect its ancient treasures. With support from many countries, they were   finally successful. The huge temples were carefully removed from their original site and moved to a safe location so that the dam  could be built. After  their  success  in  saving the  temples  in Egypt,  UNESCO  went   on to  save  more  sites around  the  world.  They  protected lagoons in Venice, ruins in Pakistan, and temples in Indonesia. With industrialisation changing the world rapidly, there   were many sites that needed to be saved. Eventually, UNESCO formed the World Heritage Organisation to protect important  natural and historic sites wherever it was necessary. By now, the World Heritage Organisation has protected hundreds of sites ranging from  beautiful natural islands to  buildings in large cities and ancient ruins. If you're able to visit any of the many protected sites, you'll agree it was worth it. A NEW CAPITAL When the new state of Pakistan was founded in 1947, Karachi acted as the capital city. However, it was difficult for Karachi to remain in this role due to a number of drawbacks such as the climate and the state of the existing buildings. Rather than try to overcome these drawbacks, the government decided to create a new capital city. In 1959, a commission was established to investigate the possible locations of this new city. The advisor appointed to the commission was Dr Doxiadis, a famous architect and city planner. Dr Doxiadis and his colleagues looked at the various locations. They then produced a report suggesting two possible areas: one just outside Karachi and the other to the north of Rawalpindi. Both locations had advantages as well as disadvantages. Which site was it to be? The choice between these two options was made after consideration of many factors, such as transportation, the availabilities of water, economic factors, and factors of national interest. Finally, the site north of Rawalpindi was chosen and on the 24th February 1960, the new capital was given the name of ‘Islamabad’ and a master plan was drawn up. This master plan divided the area into three different sections: Islamabad itself, neighbouring Rawalpindi, and the national park. Each of these three sections had a different role. Islamabad would act as the national's capital and would serve its administrative and cultural needs, whereas Rawalpindi would remain the regional centre with industry and commerce. The third piece of the plan, the national park, was planned to provide space for education, recreation, and agriculture. Today Islamabad is a thriving city of about 1 million people. It offers a healthy a pollution-free atmosphere, plenty of water, and many green spaces. Guide tree-lined streets, elegant public buildings, and well-organised bazaars and shopping centres. The new capital is a superb example of good urban planning. Question 34. Why was a commission founded in 1959? Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of  the questions from 39to 45. Plants and animals will find it difficult to escape from or adjust to the effect of global warming, Scientists have already   observed shifts in the lifecycles of many plants and animals, such as flowers blooming earlier and birds hatching earlier in the   spring. Many species have begun shifting where they live or their annual migration patterns due to warmer temperatures. With further warming, animals will tend to migrate toward the poles and up mountainsides toward higher elevations.  Plants will also attempt to shift their ranges, seeking new areas as old habitats grow too warm. In many places, however, human   development will prevent these shifts. Species that find cities or farmland blocking their way north or south may become extinct.   Species  living in  unique ecosystems,  such as  those  found  in polar  and mountaintop  regions,  are  especially  at   risk because  migration to new habitats is not possible. For example, polar bears and marine mammals in the Arctic are already threatened by   dwindling sea ice but have nowhere farther to go. Projecting species extinction due to global warming is extremely difficult. Some scientists have estimated that 20 to 50  percent of species could be committed to extinction with 2 to 3 Celsius degrees of further warming. The rate of warming, not just   the magnitude, is extremely important for plants and animals. Some species and even entire ecosystems, such as certain types of  forest, many not be able to adjust quickly enough and may disappear. Ocean ecosystems, especially  fragile  ones like coral reefs, will also be affected by global warming. Warmer ocean  temperatures can cause coral to “bleach”, a state which if prolonged will lead to the death of the coral. Scientists estimate that  even 1 Celsius degree of additional warming could lead to widespread bleaching and death of coral reefs around the world. Also   increasing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere enters the ocean and increases the acidity of ocean waters. This acidification further   stresses ocean ecosystems. Question 39.Scientists have observed that warmer temperatures in the spring cause flowers to                  .   A. die instantly  B. bloom earlier  C. become lighter              D. lose color Question 40: According to paragraph 2, when their habitats grow warmer, animals tend to move     .   A. south – eastwards and down mountainsides toward lower B. north – westwards and up mountainsides toward higher C. toward the North Pole and down mountainsides toward lower D. toward the poles and up mountainsides toward higher Question 41: The pronoun “those” in paragraph 2 refers to                 .   A. species  B. ecosystems  C. habitats               D. areas Question 42: It is mentioned in the passage that if the global temperature rose by 2 or 3 Celcius degrees,          .   A. half of the earth’s surface would be B. the sea level would rise by 20 C. water supply would decrease by 50 D. 20 to 50 percent of species could become Question 43: The word “fragile” in paragraph 4 most probably means            .   A. very large  B.easily damaged C. rather strong  D. pretty hard
