The expansion of English to become a lingua franca

The term English as a lingua franca (ELF) has become the subject of considerable debate nowadays. What emerges from much of the discussion, however, is that there seems to be an excellent problem of uncertainty as to what, precisely, ELF eventually is, and how it relates to the much more firmly established field of world English as known as WE.
