Trapping electromagnetic waves by metamaterials

In this report, we experimentally and numerically demonstrated a simple metamaterial structure, which perfectly absorbs the microwave radiation. Samples are prepared using the photo-lithography technique and measured by the standard microwave vector network analyzer. Simulations using the finite integration technique are performed to explore the possible mechanism of the observation. It is found that the absorbed energy not only dissipates via material losses, as it was believed, but also reradiates as secondary sources. The finding results would be beneficial for microwave electromagnetic absorption/radiation based applications and stealth technologies.
