We observed the formation of damage induced by focusing a nanosecond laser beam inside a glass block using the shadowgraph imaging technique. The damage growth was observed during some first dozens of nanoseconds of the process. The result shows that the damage growth is divided into two periods. During the laser pulse, the damage grows quickly, following the formation of laser-induced plasma. When the laser is switched off, the damage grows at a much slower rate. We propose that the growth of damage during the second period is due to the propagation of the shear wave inside the material.

This study is comparing thermal radiofrequency ablation (TRFA) of the thoracic dorsal root ganglia (TDRG) guided by Xper CT and fluoroscopy with the standard fluoroscopy. Methods: This randomized clinical trial included 78 patients suffering from chronic refractory pain due to chest malignancies randomly allocated into one of two groups according to guidance of TRFA of TDRG.

Irreversible electroporation (IRE) is a local ablation technique utilizing high voltage, low energy direct current to create nanopores in cell membrane which disrupt homeostasis and leads to cell death. Previous reports have suggested IRE may have a role in treating borderline resectable and unresectable Stage 3 pancreatic tumors.

In this study, we observed the evolution of a cavitation bubble induced by focusing a nanosecond-pulsed laser on an epoxy-resin surface using a photoelasticity imaging technique. The radius-time curve of the bubble within the first 1000 ns was reported for different pulse energies from 20 to 60 mJ. The result showed that the bubble expanded faster at higher laser energy but followed a simple rule R~at0.3

To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of ablating renal cell carcinoma (RCC) by irreversible electroporation (IRE). Methods: Fifteen patients (19 lesions) with RCC who underwent IRE were retrospectively reviewed. Seven patients had solitary kidneys. Two lesions were located in the renal hilus. One patient had chronic renal insufficiency.

The secondary shock emitted at the collapse and rebound of a laser-induced cavitation bubble was studied directly and visually by the photoelasticity imaging technique. The result shows the image of the pressure wave transmitted into the solid target due to the impact of the secondary shock. From the observation, we recommend that the secondary shock is quite strong and homogeneous, thus can be utilized to provide additional machining effect to the laser ablation process.

Irreversible electroporation (IRE) is a non-thermal injury tissue ablation technique that uses electrical pulses to cause cell death. IRE damages the endothelial cells of blood vessels; however these cells re-grow, and thus IRE does not result in permanent damage to blood vessels.

Electroporation is a novel treatment technique utilizing electric pulses, traveling between two or more electrodes, to ablate targeted tissue. The first in human studies have proven the safety of IRE for the ablation of renal masses. However the efficacy of IRE through histopathological examination of an ablated renal tumour has not yet been studied.

Phrenic nerve palsy (PNP) is still a cause for concern in Cryoballoon ablation (CBA) procedures. New surveillance techniques, such as invasive registration of the compound motor action potential (CMAP), have been thought to prevent the occurrence of PNP.

Since their discovery in 1991 by the Japanese scientist ‘‘Sumio Iijima’’, carbon nanotubes have been of great interest, both from a fundamental point of view and for future applications. Different types of carbon nanotubes can be produced in various ways. Economically feasible large-scale production and purification techniques are still under development.

We demonstrate how supervised discriminative machine learning techniques can be used to automate the assessment of ‘English as a Second or Other Language’ (ESOL) examination scripts. In particular, we use rank preference learning to explicitly model the grade relationships between scripts. A number of different features are extracted and ablation tests are used to investigate their contribution to overall performance. A comparison between regression and rank preference models further supports our method. ...

Almost all technologies described so far are suitable for prototyping or for small series production only. It simply takes a lot of time and is therefore costly to manufacture a large number of microstructures by laser ablation or wire erosion and by milling or SLM. This is not so in the case of the etching techniques. Here, a large number of microstructure devices can be very easily generated. Another possibility to obtain a large number of microstructures is by embossing.

Several techniques for fabrication of through-wafer vias in silicon have been compared in terms of achievable via diameter, shape and geometry and their influence on mechanical strength of silicon dies/wafers. Assessed techniques are: powder blasting, laser melt cutting, laser ablation, and deep reactive ion etching. The resolution of each method and influence on geometry was evaluated by fabrication through-wafer holes and slots in 240µm-thick silicon wafers. The mechanical strength is measured using ring-on-ring (RoR) and four-point bending methods.
