Abnormal cervical lesions

Methylation levels may be associated with and serve as markers to predict risk of progression of precancerous cervical lesions. We conducted an epigenome-wide association study (EWAS) of CpG methylation and progression to high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN2+) following an abnormal screening test.

Colposcopic examination with biopsy is the standard procedure for referrals with abnormal cervical cancer screening results; however, the decision to biopsy is controvertible. Having a predictive model may help to improve high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion or worse (HSIL+) predictions which could reduce unnecessary testing and protecting women from unnecessary harm.

Cervical cancer is a public health problem. It is one of the leading causes of death in women worldwide and the second leading cause of female cancer-related deaths. Cervical cancer screening enables the detection of abnormal cervical cells, including precancerous cervical lesions, as well as early-stage cervical cancer.

We report a case in which a polypoid lesion with a diameter of 5 mm was diagnosed as a cervical polyp due to a negative Papanicolaou (Pap) smear in the cervix, and polypectomy revealed a diagnosis of villoglandular papillary adenocarcinoma (VGA) on histopathological examination. A 63-year-old woman with a cervical polyp, who had no abnormal symptoms and a negative Pap smear was referred to our hospital.

Cytology and HPV genotype screening play an important role in cervical cancer detection. Whether multiple HPV genotyping can predict cytological lesions remains to be further studied. Two thousand two hundred twenty-four females were analyzed for cytology and HPV genotypes test.

Cervical cancer was the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer related deaths in 2013 among women in Zambia. We determined factors associated with vaginal douching with any solution other than water and examined its role as a risk factor for abnormal cervical lesions among Zambian women.

The high burden of cervical cancer in Zambia prompted the Ministry of Health and partners to develop the cervical cancer prevention program in Zambia (CCPPZ) in 2006. Despite this intervention more women continue to die from the disease and there is little understanding of factors that may be linked with abnormal cervical lesions in the general population.

There is limited data in Ghana on the epidemiology of HPV and cervical neoplasia and their associations with HIV. This study aimed to compare among HIV-1 seropositive and HIV-seronegative Ghanaian women: (1) the prevalence, genotype distribution and risk factors associated with cervical HPV infection; and (2) the prevalence and risk factors associated with abnormal cervical cytology.

Cervical cancer is caused by high-risk Human Papillomavirus (hr-HPV) infection associated with cofactors that has been analyzed as predictors of the remission or persistence of cytological abnormalities remission or persistence.

The speculum should be carefully positioned so the entire cervix is seen. If excess mucus or other secretions obscure the cervix, they should be gently removed using a proctoswab without disturbing the epithelium. Small amounts of blood will not interfere with cytologic evaluation, but large amounts, as occurs during menses, preclude cytologic interpretation by conventional Pap smear. This is considerably less of a problem when liquid based cytology is used.
