Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples (hereafter respectfully referred to as Indigenous Australians) represent about 3% of the total Australian population. Major health disparities exist between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Australians. To address this, it is vital to understand key health priorities and knowledge gaps in the current landscape of clinical trial activity focusing on Indigenous health in Australia.

Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women are at very high risk of violence but there is little evidence about the age at which their higher exposure to violence commences. The aim of this study was to investigate violence infected on Aboriginal girls during childhood and adolescence, relative to Aboriginal boys and non-Aboriginal girls.

Reliable cognitive assessment for Indigenous Australians is difficult given that mainstream tests typically rely on Western concepts, content and values. A test’s psychometric properties should therefore be assessed prior to use in other cultures. The aim of this pilot study was to examine the reliability and acceptability of four cognitive tests for Australian Aboriginal people.

Gambling problems appear to be more prevalent in the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population than in the non-Indigenous population. Although gambling harms can be significant, treatmentseeking rates are low. The Delphi expert consensus method was used to develop a set of guidelines on how a family or community member can assist an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person with gambling problems.

The area in which Sydney is located today has been inhabited by Australian aboriginals for 40,000 years. The European interest in the area began with the British explorer James Cook’s arrival in 1770 to what is known today as Botany Bay. After the discovery, the British government decided to found a new colony there, and in 1788 a settlement of convicts was established by Captain Arthur Phillip. Phillip named the town after the British minister, Thomas Townshend, who held the title Lord Sydney....
