  • Longitudinal studies are crucial for discovering causal relationships between the microbiome and human disease. We present MITRE, the Microbiome Interpretable Temporal Rule Engine, a supervised machine learning method for microbiome time-series analysis that infers human-interpretable rules linking changes in abundance of clades of microbes over time windows to binary descriptions of host status, such as the presence/absence of disease.

  • As metagenomic studies move to increasing numbers of samples, communities like the human gut may benefit more from the assembly of abundant microbes in many samples, rather than the exhaustive assembly of fewer samples. We term this approach leaderboard metagenome sequencing.

  • Metagenomic profiling, predicting the presence and relative abundances of microbes in a sample, is a critical first step in microbiome analysis. Alignment-based approaches are often considered accurate yet computationally infeasible. Here, we present a novel method, Metalign, that performs efficient and accurate alignmentbased metagenomic profiling.

  • Human gut microbial communities have been known to produce vitamins, which are subsequently absorbed by the host in the large intestine. However, the relationship between species with vitamin pathway associated functional features or their gene abundance in different states of health and disease is lacking.

  • Phosphorous is one of the most abundant metallic element found in the earth’s crust and present in soils in both organic and inorganic forms. Though it is present in high concentration, only 0.1% of the total P is available to plant because of poor solubility and its fixation in soil with other metallic elements in the soil such as Ca, Al, Fe to form calcium phosphate, aluminum phosphate and ferrous phosphate and thus becomes unavailable to plants.

  • Aluminium is one of the most abundant metals. This metal is responsible for inhibiting growth and productivity of many cultures thereby affecting the metabolism of most of the microbes. The current study is aimed at examining the effect of glucose addition on bacterial growth under aluminium stressed conditions. For this purpose, nutrient broth was supplemented with different concentration of aluminium viz. 0mM, 20mM, 60mM and 80mM. In addition to above heavy metal supplementation, the nutrient broth was additionally provided with varying concentration of glucose (0.25%, 0.5% and 1% glucose).

  • Phosphorus (P) is limiting for crop yield on > 30% of the world's arable land and, by some estimates, world resources of inexpensive phosphorus may be depleted by 2050 (Vance et al., 2003). It is the second important key plant nutrient after nitrogen. An adequate supply of phosphorus is therefore required for proper functioning and various metabolisms of plants. Majority of phosphorus in soils is fixed and hence, plant available phosphorus is scarcely available despite the abundance of both inorganic and organic phosphorus forms in soils.

  • CHAPTER TWENTY Calcified Algae and Bacteria Calcified microbes expanded rapidly in abundance and diversity from NemakitDaldynian to Tommotian. This rapid diversification near the base of the Cambrian reflects a burst of cyanobacterial evolution, and commencement of an environmentally facilitated Cyanobacterial.
