Clinical genome and exome sequencing can diagnose pediatric patients with complex conditions that often require follow-up care with multiple specialties. The American Academy of Pediatrics emphasizes the role of the medical home and the primary care pediatrician in coordinating care for patients who need multidisciplinary support.

Defining the evolving boundaries of health services research and its workforce remains a challenging and complex exercise. As a multidisciplinary field, health service research has, at times, struggled to remain broad enough to encompass the diverse interests of its members while trying to become more precise for the purposes of branding and advocacy work.

Paramount to population health is adequate access to care. Health systems can offer the highest quality care, but if their patients cannot access it, the benefits are lost. The National Academy of Medicine (previously, the Institute of Medicine) deems access to care— whenever needed and through whatever delivery method—a critical dimension of care quality.

The American Academy of Pediatrics advocates that pediatricians should be involved in tobacco counseling and has developed guidelines for counseling. We present a prognostic tool for use by health care practitioners in both clinical and non-clinical settings, to identify adolescents at risk of becoming daily smokers.

Recent attempts in the USA and Europe to ban the circumcision of male children have been unsuccessful. Of current concern is a report by the Tasmanian Law Reform Institute (TLRI) recommending that non-therapeutic circumcision be prohibited, with parents and doctors risking criminal sanctions except where the parents have strong religious and ethnic ties to circumcision.

Social media is a common way for mothers to seek advice about their infants. However, little is known about how low-income urban mothers use social media to obtain infant health information and whether this information is consistent with expert pediatric recommendations.

I focus here on a description of the first, 1990 montage, which originates the format, utilizing many of the clips from Precious Images and establishing conventions for subsequent montages. It followed an almost giddy opening speech by Academy president Karl Malden emphasizing the newly global reach of the satellite-assisted Academy Awards telecast (the previous year was the first time it was seen in Russia): “How can you have a closed society when the skies are open from Moscow to Beijing to—you name it—Gary, Indiana?” In that context, Malden introduces Workman’s...

On June 2, 2002, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) convened a group of individuals in Washington, D.C., to discuss owner-authorized handguns. Some 40 people with diverse back- grounds took part in the one-day workshop (see Appendix A). This report is a summary of the workshop discussions, which focused on three topics: the state of the art of technology for creating owner-authorized handguns, liability concerns affecting the development and use of such firearms, and the potential impact of these devices on health and crime in the United States (see Appendix B)....

This report is not the first recent National Academies’ report to focus on the issue of family violence. It is the third and, regrettably, it may not be the last. Family violence continues to plague society and we have not yet developed either the practical interventions or evidence base to address this important social issue. When Congress passed the Health Professions and Education Partnerships Act of 1998, it issued an important challenge to government and the health professions.

Over the past several years, scientists, public health officials, and policy makers have become increasingly interested in understanding how the emergence and spread of infectious diseases could be affected by environmental factors, particularly variations in climate. In September 1995 the Institute of Medicine/ National Academy of Sciences and the National Science and Technology Council held a Conference on Human Health and Global Climate Change.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has requested that the National Academies, through the National Research Council (NRC) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM), conduct a series of reviews of its research portfolio. The charge is discussed in detail in a subsequent section, but in general it is to evaluate the relevance and impact of a NIOSH research program and to provide recommendations for future research. This report contains a review and evaluation of the NIOSH Traumatic Injury (TI) Research Program.

Agesilaus, king of Sparta, when asked what things boys should learn, replied, “Those which they will practise when they become men.” As health requires the observance of the laws inherent to the different organs of the human system, so not only boys, but girls, should acquire a knowledge of the laws of their organization. If sound morality depends upon the inculcation of correct principles in youth, equally so does a sound physical system depend on a correct physical education during the same period of life.
