  • ESI greatly enhanced the ability to characterize protein and peptides by MS. ESI requires the sample of interest to be in solution- flow in to the ionization source region. To ionize the sample, high voltage is applied, result in the sample becoming positively or negatively charged; however, positive ionization is used primarily in the analysis proteins and peptides. As it exits the spray tip, the solution produces submicrometer-sized droplets containing both solute and analyte ions. The sample is then desorbed of solute prior to entering the analyzer region....

  • If you read March’s paper on ion traps: – What is resonant excitation? Summarize how resonant excitation is used in typical ion trap MS experiments. If you read the Russell and Edmondson paper on MALDITOF and accurate mass: – Summarize the advantages and disadvantages of MALDI-TOF (with DE and reflection) versus FTICR (including ESI-FTICR), especially in biochemical applications.

  • To help ensure accurate measurements, Region 9 recommends that these guidelines be followed whenever VOCs in soil or other solid matrices are sampled and analyzed. These guidelines address methods for: (1) handling of samples as intact soil cores; (2) preserving samples; (3) storing samples in hermetically sealed containers; and (4) minimizing analyte losses due to direct volatilization (both in the field and the laboratory) and biodegradation.

  • The practicing radiologist is continually challenged to update his/her competencies so as to deliver state-of-the-art radiological care. Nowhere is this truer than in the rapidly evolving world of magnetic resonance imaging, where innovations in both technology and diagnostic pharmaceuticals have dramatically altered the landscape of practice.

  • Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is one of the most significant swine diseases worldwide. Despite its relevance, serum biomarkers associated with early-onset viral infection, when clinical signs are not detectable and the disease is characterized by a weak anti-viral response and persistent infection, have not yet been identified. Surface-enhanced laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (SELDI-TOF MS) is a reproducible, accurate, and simple method for the identification of biomarker proteins related to disease in serum.

  • A robust dictionary of semantic frames is an essential element of natural language understanding systems that use ontologies. However, creating lexical resources that accurately capture semantic representations en masse is a persistent problem. Where the sheer amount of content makes hand creation inefficient, computerized approaches often suffer from over generality and difficulty with sense disambiguation.

  • Fundamental scienti¯c discoveries have been made with the help of computational methods. For instance, commonalities in the behavior of chaotic systems, most prominently Feigenbaum universality, had not been discovered or understood without computers. And only with numerical computations is it possible to predict the mass of the proton so accurately that fundamental theories of matter can be put to test. Such examples highlight the enormous role of numerical calculations for basic science....

  • Other studies, primarily with laboratory animals, suggest that the chemical composition5 and surface areas of the particles may be more important than particle mass. Scientists are continuing to study the health effects of particles and are developing better methods for measuring the important constituents. It may be possible in the near future to more accurately assess the effects of inhaled particles on human health. Nitrogen Oxides Nitrogen oxides are produced during most combustion processes. Mobile sources and power plants are the major contributors in Southern California.

  • The researches of Sir Harris Nicolas, Dr. Furnivall, Mr. Selby and others have provided us with a considerable mass of detailed information regarding the life and career of Geoffrey Chaucer. Since the publication of Nicolas's biography of the poet prefixed to the Aldine edition of Chaucer's works in 1845, the old traditional biography of conjecture and inference, based often on mere probability or the contents of works erroneously ascribed to Chaucer, has disappeared and in its place has been developed an accurate biography based on facts.

  • Messages should be disseminated using existing, effective channels of communication. Use of mass media – through health, women’s and youth magazines, radio and television shows – can be effective in reaching large proportions of the target population, but should be done strategically. Using internet and SMS technologies can be useful in providing accurate information and countering misinformation. Messages regarding utilization of prevention services should be focused in areas where these services are planned or currently available...
