Acinetobacter species are the commonest pathogens causing nosocomial infections. Acinetobacter is essentially resistant to many antibiotics and they are known to produce extended spectrum beta lactamase and metalo beta lactamase. Aim of the study is to detect Metalo beta lactamase producing Acinetobacter spp. from clinical samples in tertiary care hospital. Between January 2015 and June 2015, total 368 Acinetobacter spp were isolated from different clinical samples.

Acinetobacter, has been identified as an important pathogen in nosocomial outbreaks with high levels of emerging drug resistance. So the present study was conducted in Acinetobacter spp to find out the utility of the multiplex PCR assay, which may be used as a useful technique in the early detection & prevention of NDM-1 gene harbouring in clinical isolates taken from the patients coming to the tertiary care hospital.

Acinetobacter causes a wide variety of illness in debilitated and hospitalized patients. Carbapenem resistance in Acinetobacter is an emerging problem and is a cause of concern as many nosocomial infections with Acinetobacter are resistant to most other antibiotics. The present study was aimed to study metallo-β-lactamase (MBL) production in Acinetobacter species. During one year study (Sep.2010 to Aug.2011), all isolates of Acinetobacter obtained from various clinical samples like respiratory, pus, blood and others were included.

Non fermenting Gram Negative Bacilli (NFGNB) once considered as contaminants, now emerged as a major cause of life threatening nosocomial infections and as multidrug resistant pathogens. Acinetobacter species are the opportunistic pathogens with increasing prevalance in the nosocomial infections. Community acquired infections are also common in Acinetobacter. It accounts for 10% of all community-acquired bacteremic pneumonias. To isolate, identify and detect Carbapenem resistance producing Acinetobacter spp., and confirm Metallo Beta Lactamase ( MBL) production by phenotypic methods.

Acinetobacter baumannii is a significant pathogen in health care settings, where it causes a multitude of infections that include bacteremia, pneumonia, meningitis and urinary tract and wound infections. The increasing importance of infections caused by Acinetobacter spp., and the multi-drug resistance of the strains render studies of epidemiology and antibiotic resistance necessary for the prevention of further infections with this organism.

Most common bacterial agents of Lower Respiratory Tract Infection in the Intensive Care Units are Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Klebsiella, Citrobacter; which are multi drug resistant, and with limiting the therapeutic options.Nonfermenting Gram-negative bacilli are known to produce Extended spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) and metallo β-lactamases. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter spp. in particular are most often associated with carbapenem resistance.

Honey is defined as a natural sweet substance which is produced from the floral nectar by honeybees. Honey is well-known for its antimicrobial activities and it has been reported to have antibacterial effect to about 60 species of bacteria and antifungal properties as well. Honey has been used to inhibit these bacteria as well as to prevent and treat skin and other infections. Honey as a tropical antibacterial agent for treatment of infected wounds. The natural ingredients of honey show different activities against various microorganisms.

Antibiotic resistance has risen perilously in all parts of the world. The lack of appropriate therapeutics to encounter resistant pathogens has enhanced the urge for the development of either new antibiotics or different therapeutic combinations.

Acinetobacter baumanii can cause serious healthcare associated infections (HAI) and the incidence is increasing with many strains showing resistant to multiple antibiotics. Acinetobacter spp. are associated with various clinical cases which sometimes is often fatal. Their abundant occurrence in nature and minimal nutritional requirements make them a potent pathogen to cause well-formed infection. They occur mostly in the ICUs as most of the patients are on ventilator. MDR strains are associated with critically ill patients.

Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media (CSOM) is a well known disease for its persistence and recurrence in spite of treatment. It was found to be the single major cause of conductive deafness, speech disorders. It involves considerable morbidity and can cause extra and intracranial complications. Due to development of beta lactamase producing microorganisms, drug resistant strains emerge making drug resistance a major cause of treatment failure. The isolation of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was reported within 1year of introduction of methicillin.

This study was carried out retrospectively in the Department of Microbiology SKIMS Medical College and associated hospital, Srinagar for a period of two years (January 2017–December 2018). A total number of 194 pus samples of inpatients from different wards as well as of out-patients were processed using standard microbiological techniques. Of the 194 pus samples processed, 94 samples were culture positive (48.4%).

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is an important nosocomial infection in mechanically ventilated patients at intensive care unit (ICU). The administration of accurate and timely initial empirical antibiotic therapy is essential to reduce the morbidity and mortality from Ventilator-associated pneumonia. Initial empiric antimicrobial therapy for VAP greatly depends on the type of causative pathogen and its resistance pattern. During the six months study period, 196 patients received mechanical ventilation.

Acinetobacter baumannii has emerged as a worldwide problem as a nosocomial pathogen in hospitalized patients. Acinetobacter spp. can cause a multitude of infections including pneumonia, bacteremia, meningitis, urinary tract infections, and skin and soft tissue infections, and the mortality associated with these infections is high. Isolates resistant to almost all commercially available antimicrobials have been identified, thus limiting treatment options.
