Acorus calamus

We report here that earthworm can be used as an in vivo system to prescreen antimitotic compounds. The known antimitotic compound colchicine and the aqueous extract of Acorus calamus L. rhizome were used to examine this system. The antimitotic activity of colchicine and the rhizome extract was confirmed by methods with Allium cepa root tip, earthworm regeneration, and MTT (3-(4,5-dimethyl thiazolyl-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide). An earthworm regeneration assay examined the regeneration ability of tissues from amputated regions of the earthworm.

Purposive sampling technique was employed in the area of study (district Ganderbal).

Laboratory studies were conducted at Department of Crop Protection, Agricultural College and Research Institute, Valavachanur – 606 753, Thiruvannamalai District to study the effect of plant powders tested against rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae infesting sorghum. The experiment on ten plant powders 2 per cent, among them Acorus calamus 2 per cent rhizome powder was found to be significantly the best compared to other treatments.

A field experiment entitled “Effect of nutrient management and crop geometry in sweet flag (Acorus calamus)” was carried out at Instructional-cum-Research farm, Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat during 2012-2013 in randomized block design (RBD) with three replications to assess the effect of different crop geometry and application of different organic and inorganic fertilizers on plant growth and development and yield attributing characters for commercial production.

Acorus calamus L. an aromatic rhizomatous herb plant has a long history as a medicine which is often used as stimulant, mild tonic, carminative, diaphoretic, expectorant, hypertensive, sedative and also used in the treatment of arthritis, neuralgia, diarrhea, dyspepsia, hair loss and other disorder. Among the several constraints in productivity of this medicinal plant, abiotic stress relating to disease is the major one. The rust disease caused by Uromyces spp is one of the important disease causing huge losses of the plant and is greatly influenced by the abiotic factors.

The present work was designed to evaluate the antibacterial properties of the ethanol extracts of five selected medicinal plants Azadirachta indica, Ocimum sanctum, Jasminium humile, Glycyrrhiza glabra and Acorus calamus on bacteria causing respiratory tract infections. Almost all the tested medicinal plants showed inhibitory effect against the test organisms. Among the medicinal plants evaluated Ocimum sanctum was found effective against most of the test organisms except Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
