The study was carried out to investigate lipid and protein oxidation of herring (Sardinella gibbosa) that was treated with (2.5% w/v) sodium acetate at 4o C. After 3, 6, 9, and 12 days, lipid and protein oxidation were evaluated by indications such as pH value, peroxide (PV), thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), protease enzyme activity and sulfhydryl.

Ebook "Mitochondria and cancer" presents thorough analyses of mitochondrial dysfunction as one of the hallmarks of cancer, discusses the clinical implications of mitochondrial defects in cancer, and as unique cellular targets for novel and selective anti-cancer therapy. These include differences in mitochondrial metabolic activity, molecular composition of mitochondria and mtDNA sequence, as well as in alteration of nuclear genes encoding mitochondrial proteins.

Galectin-3 (Gal-3), the only chimeric β-galactosides-binding lectin, consists of Gal-3N (N-terminal regulatory peptide) and Gal-3C (C-terminal carbohydrate-recognition domain). Interestingly, Gal-3C could specifically inhibit endogenous full-length Gal-3 to exhibit anti-tumor activity. Here, we aimed to further improve the anti-tumor activity of Gal-3C via developing novel fusion proteins.

Prostate cancer is a disease that seriously troubles men. However, there are some inevitable limitations in interventional therapy for prostate cancer patients at present, most of which are caused by low selectivity and high toxic side effects due to unclear drug targets. In this study, we identified the target protein of Curcusone C with antiprostate cancer potential activity and verified its target and mechanism of action.

A molecular docking study of three natural acridones, namely citrusinine-I, 5-hydroxynoracronycin, and paratrimerin C on a target enzyme DNA polymerase μ (Pol μ), was performed. In addition, the hydrogen peroxide anion (HOO─ ), a model radical, and delavirdine, a synthetic drug, are used as ligands for docking on this target protein to investigate the activity of the selected compounds to protect Pol μ protein against their harmful effects.

Protein kinase C (PKC) is a multifunctional serine and PKC can phosphorylate serine residues in the cytoplasmic domain of tyrosinase, thereby regulating the activity of tyrosinase. Activated PKC is bound to the melanosome membrane, and unactivated PKC is free in the cytoplasm of melanocytes.

The aim of this study is to obtain the copper-binding protein hydrolysate from the white leg shrimp head (WLSH) by-product using enzymatic hydrolysis. The outcome indicated that the copper-binding capacity (CBC) of the WLSH protein hydrolysate achieved the maximum value of 19.4±0.5 mg Cu2+/g protein with hydrolysis conditions including Flavourzyme preparation, pH 7.5, 50°C, the enzyme : substrate (E:S) ratio of 80 U/g protein and 5h of hydrolysis.

The role of recombinant activated protein C (aPC) during sepsis is still controversial. It showed antiinflammatory effect and improved the microvascular perfusion in experimental models of septic shock. The present study was aimed at testing the hypothesis that recombinant aPC therapy improves the microcirculation during severe sepsis.

Previous research showed association between frailty and an impaired autonomic nervous system; however, the direct efect of frailty on heart rate (HR) behavior during physical activity is unclear. The purpose of the current study was to determine the association between HR increase and decrease with frailty during a localized upper-extremity function (UEF) task to establish a multimodal frailty test.

Thioredoxin reductase (E.C 1.6.4.5.; TrxR) is an enzyme belonging to the flavoprotein family of pyridine nucleotide-disulfide oxidoreductases. In this study, mitochondrial TrxR enzyme was purified from rainbow trout mitochondria. Thanks to the 2 consecutive procedures (preparation of homogenate and 2’,5’-ADP Sepharose 4B affinity chromatography), the enzyme, having the specific activity of 11.9 EU mg protein-1, was purified with a yield of 2.38% and 672-fold. The purity of the enzyme was monitored and the molecular weight of its subunits was calculated as 70 kDa by SDS-PAGE.

This study was conducted to determine the effects of different drying methods and cold storage treatments on the postharvest quality and nutritional properties of P. ostreatus mushroom. In the study, six different treatments including natural drying, oven drying (60°C), microwave drying (450 W), storage at -18°C, 4°C and 10°C were evaluated. After drying and cold storage, pH value, ash, protein, color, total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, antioxidant activity and element contents in mushroom samples were detected.

The clinical use of cisplatin, which is a first-line anticancer agent, is highly restricted due to its adverse effects on kidneys that lead to nephrotoxicity. Therefore, some potential reno-protective substances have been used in combination with cisplatin to cope with nephrotoxicity. Due to its high antitumor activity and oxygen-carrying capacity, we investigated the molecular effects of squalene against cisplatin-induced oxidative stress and kidney damage in mice. Single dose of cisplatin (7 mg/kg) was given to male Balb/c mice.

TNF is a pleiotropic cytokine and shows its biological function by binding to its receptors called TNFR1 and TNFR2. While TNFR1 induces apoptosis by activation of caspase-8 via the “death domain”, it also activates IKKα/β, MKK3/6, MKK4/7 by activation of TAK1. Although the TNFR1 signaling pathway is known by in large, it is not known how AKT and MAPKs p38, ERK1/2, and JNK1/2 are activated.

Coxiella burnetii is a Gram-negative gammaproteobacterium and zoonotic agent of Q fever. C. burnetii’s genome contains an abundance of pseudogenes and numerous selfish genetic elements. MITEs (miniature invertedrepeat transposable elements) are non-autonomous transposons that occur in all domains of life and are thought to be insertion sequences (ISs) that have lost their transposase function. Like most transposable elements (TEs), MITEs are thought to play an active role in evolution by altering gene function and expression through insertion and deletion activities.

Nematode sperm have unique and highly diverged morphology and molecular biology. In particular, nematode sperm contain subcellular vesicles known as membranous organelles that are necessary for male fertility, yet play a still unknown role in overall sperm function. Here we take a novel proteomic approach to characterize the functional protein complement of membranous organelles in two Caenorhabditis species: C. elegans and C. remanei.

Moderate-intensity exercise training improves skeletal muscle aerobic capacity and increased oxidative enzyme activity, as well as exercise tolerance in COPD patients. Methods: To investigate whether the home-based exercise training program can reduce inflammatory biomarkers in patients with COPD, twelve patients using mobile phone assistance and 14 with free walk were assessed by incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT), spirometry, strength of limb muscles, and serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and inflammatory cytokines.
