Two heterotrophic nitrifying bacterial strains, D2 and D7 were isolated from an activated sludge of sponges in a laboratory-scale downflow hanging sponge reactor. The aim of this work was to isolate heterotrophic nitrifying bacteria from DHS activated sludges and to determine the ammonium removal efficiency of NRPW using the isolates.

Canna edulis. Ker starch processing wastewater from craft villages contains high organic concentration such as starch, cellulose, xylan, protein… and especially high starch concentration after the states of grinding, sedimentation and filtration. The concentration of COD and BOD5, SS and coliform of wastewater are hundreds times higher than standards.

This work demonstrated the potential of US for mitigating membrane fouling. However, the integration of the US transducers within the membrane system will be a major challenge for the application of US in membrane cleaning. It is more appropriate that US is used as pre-treatment to the membrane system, the transducers can be placed prior to the coagulant feed line. Further work on the determination of the detailed mechanisms associated with enhancing coagulation would enable optimisation of the system with regard to process, cost and energy efficiency.

Anionic and non-ionic surfactants have been detected in the influents to and effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Linear alkylbenzene sulphonates (LAS) and alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEO) are the most frequently detected anionic and non-ionic surfactants in urban wastewater. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of the presence of anionic and non-ionic surfactants in the influent to WWTPs on activated sludge processes.

Municipal wastewater treatment plants generally utilise biological activated sludge processes to remove organic compounds and nitrogen. The biological nitrogen removal (BNR) occurs in two steps, nitrification (ammonium removal) and denitrification (nitrates removal). This study focused on a medium-sized wastewater treatment plant (WTP) which experienced poor nitrification for years, mainly when the weather temperature drops.

In this study, a composite material (ACS) was successfully synthesized from activated carbon (AC) derived from soybean curd and sludge from the supply water treatment process using FeCl3. Subsequently, the ACS was employed as a heterogeneous catalyst for the degradation of Paracetamol (PRC) in solutions under conditions of the Fenton process.

In the present paper, a new process, whose acronym is UTN (University of Trento) system, is proposed and tested at full scale for reducing the amount of sludge of the wastewater treatment plant. The UTN system allows sludge reduction in conventional activated sludge (CAS) due to the cell lysis, the sludge decay and, above all, to the selection of slow growing microorganism.

In this study, the commercial powder activated carbon (PAC) was added to a bench scale conventional activated sludge (CAS) system to enhance phenol removal. The mixed liquor suspended solid (MLSS) concentration of CAS with adding PAC was stable in all stages of operation, while MLSS concentrations in CAS without PAC addition sharply decreased as the Phenol loading reached 1.8 g phenol/L.day.

The combination of ultrasonic wave and H2O2 as a “green” AOP should be investigated as a post-treatment of the old landfill leachate for enhancement of biodegradation by using aerobic activated sludge. This simple combination would be expected not only to increase efficient treatment of landfill leachate by activated sludge, but also decrease amount of sludge waste.

This study, therefore, aimed to investigate the application of biochar from agricultural wastes to remove the excess nitrogen in domestic wastewater. In particular, this work examined the utilization of biochar obtained from coffee husk pyrolyzed at 350 oC to adsorb ammonium. Besides, adding biochar could be a simple and effective method for the initiation of activated sludge granulation to facilitate the treatment of low C/N ratio wastewater.

n developing countries, industrialization is the main cause of water pollution because of the various industries which generate wastewater that is needed to be discharged. The availability of fresh clean water is becoming increasingly limited in many areas of the world resulting in scarcity of potable water in many regions around the globe. The membranes have emerged as an efficient compact technology for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment.

Nitrogen is the key nutrient factor that influences soil fertility and productivity. It is the mineral nutrient that exists in different forms, but nitrate form is the most preferred form by plants. Irrespective of the form in which N is applied to soil, it undergoes transformation viz. mineralization (ammonification, nitrification), denitrification etc. by enzymes produced by micro organisms.

Petroleum oil sludge resulting from crude oil storage, illegal crude oil refining and bunkering activities constitutes environmental hazards and pollution in the crude oil producing communities in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Biostimulation with N.P.K. fertilizer option C, bioargumentation with indigenous hydrocarbon utilizing bacteria (HUB) option B, combination of biostimulation and bioaugmentation as option A and option D was without any bioremediation treatment were employed in the bioremediation of brackish water artificially polluted with petroleum oil sludge.
