Acute hepatic failure
-
Heart failure continues to be a leading cause of hospitalization worldwide, and acute heart failure (AHF) poses a significant risk of morbidity and mortality in the short term. Acute heart failure (AHF) is a clinical syndrome with different triggering factors and manifests either as new onset or as an acute decompensation of chronic HF.

The incidence of acute liver failure from herpes simplex virus is rare. Acute liver failure can lead to complications and death. Thus, careful observation is crucial, even if the patient has shown some improvements.

Acute liver failure (ALF) is a serious complication of many drugs. Amongst recreational drugs, cocaine, amphetamines and ecstasy (methylenedioxymethamphetamine) have been known to cause ALF as a complication. However, the true effects and management on the liver of such cases have not been well reported and treatment of such conditions needs prompt action.

Liver involvement in adults with acute myeloid leukemia is uncommon. Most of the case reports describe acute liver failure or obstructive jaundice, while acute hepatitis is rarely mentioned. We report a patient with acute myeloid leukemia who presented with clinical, biochemical, and radiological signs of acute hepatitis that totally regressed after chemotherapy.

Hepatitis B infection remains a global health problem, with progression to acute-chronic hepatitis, severe liver failure, and death making hepatitis B one of the most serious infections worldwide. The disease is most widely transmitted from an infected mother to her baby, after exposure to infected blood or body fluids or unsafe sexual contact.

Hepatitis C infection is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). It is one of the important risk factor causing acute to chronic illness in form of altered liver functions or development of chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma and liver failure.

A 21-year-old man from India presented with acute hepatitis associated with a 1-week history of abdominal pain, pruritus, and dark urine. Over a 7-day admission, the patient’s acute hepatitis evolved into acute liver failure with low-grade encephalopathy, markedly elevated transaminases, bilirubin, and impaired hepatic synthetic function. He was eventually diagnosed with acute hepatitis E virus (HEV) and was transitioned to supportive management. Acute HEV is a rare cause of acute liver failure.

Hepatitis B virus is one of the most common causes of liver failure in the world. Hepatitis B virus-related acute liver failure (HBV-ALF) may occur after acute hepatitis B or acute exacerbation of chronic hepatitis B. HBV-ALF can result in high mortality. HBV-ALF can be due to an overwhelming response of the immune system to hepatitis B virus.

We report the clinical presentation of a 10 month-old infant who succumbed with acute myocarditis and fulminant hepatic failure associated with a virologically confirmed human influenza A, H1N1 (2009) virus infection. To date, this is the first pediatric patient presenting with this fatal combination of complications during the current H1N1 pandemic. Therefore, we recommend meticulous assessment and follow up of the cardiac status, liver enzymes and coagulation profile in all pediatric patients with severe H1N1 influenza infection.

Hepatitis-C (HCV) infection can induce kidney injury, mostly due to formation of immunecomplexes and cryoglobulins, and possibly to a direct cytopathic effect. It may cause acute kidney injury (AKI) as a part of systemic vasculitis, and augments the risk of AKI due to other etiologies. It is responsible for mesangiocapillary or membranous glomerulonephritis, and accelerates the progression of chronic kidney disease due to other causes. HCV infection increases cardiovascular and liver-related mortality in patients on regular dialysis.

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection is one of the major causes of acute hepatitis and acute liver failure in developing and developed countries. Although effective vaccines for HAV infection are available, outbreaks of HAV infection still cause deaths, even in developed countries. One approach to control HAV infection is prevention through diet, which can inhibit HAV propagation and replication.

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection is a major cause of acute hepatitis including acute liver failure. Hepatitis B infection (HBV) occurs worldwide, with the highest rates in Asian and African countries, and there are several reports that HAV infection may have a more severe clinical course in patients with chronic HBV infection.

Acute-on-chronic hepatitis B liver failure (ACHBLF) refers to the acute deterioration of liver function during chronic hepatitis B virus infection, and is associated with high mortality, with rapid progression to death. Nucleotide-binding oligomerisation domain-like receptors (NLRs) Family Pyrin Domain Containing 3(NLRP3) inflammasome contributed to the pathogenesis of D-galactosamine and lipopolysaccharide-induced acute liver failure.

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) reflects a spectrum of neuropsychiatric abnormalities seen in patients with liver dysfunction after exclusion of other known brain disease. Classification of hepatic encephalopathy is based on the clinical setting in which symptoms occur (Table 1).1 The encephalopathy of acute liver failure shares clinical characteristics with that of cirrhosis, but also exhibits unique features. In cirrhosis, three major syndromes can be present
