Takotsubo syndrome is a sudden and an acute form of transient cardiac dysfunction, triggered by mental and physical stress. The treatment for Takotsubo syndrome is not well understood and is incompletely established. Takotsubo syndrome is partly thought to be caused by coronary ischemia under sympathetic nerve activation.

Emulsified isoflurane (EIso) is a novel intravenous general anesthetic, which can provide rapid anesthetic induction and recovery. EIso preconditioning could attenuate heart, lung and liver ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. We tested the hypothesis that intravenous pretreatment with EIso would protect kidneys against I/R injury by inhibiting systemic inflammatory responses and improving renal antioxidative ability.

Tako-Tsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) is a rare disorder with high relevance for anaesthesia. It is an acute cardiac syndrome characterized by an acute onset of reversible left ventricular dysfunction associated with emotional and physical stress. This is the only case published of a patient having five severe Tako-Tsubo incidents in five consecutive general anaesthesia procedures within one year.

Paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) is an antioxidant enzyme, whose activity decreases during the acute phase response in many species. Little is known about PON-1 and its role as a negative acute phase protein during septic inflammation in horses, but promising findings about its utility in diagnosing SIRS and predicting the outcome in diseased horses, were recently highlighted.

Stress is associated with various detrimental changes in physiological health that affect an animal’s quality of life. The hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the sympathetic-adreno-medullar (SAM) axis are two main physiological pathways that constitute the stress response of an organism.

Thifluzamide is a thiazole carboxanilide fungicide used to control a wide range of basidiomycete diseases on maize, potatoes, rice, and other crops. Although this fungicide is found in aquatic environments, there is no information about its acute and chronic toxicity on aquatic invertebrates. In the present study, to investigate acute and chronic toxicity of thifluzamide, daphnids were exposed to 1.25, 1.5, 2, and 2.5 mg/L thifluzamide for 48 h and 21 days, respectively.

The purpose of this study was to examine whether the administration of nickel (Ni) was associated with cell apoptosis and also to evaluate whether post acute oral exposure to hyperoside would cause histopathologic alterations in rats. Four groups of male SpragueDawley rats (n = 7) used in this study were as follows: a control group and groups treated with Ni (as NiCI2, 13 mg/kg), hyperoside (Hyp) (50 mg/kg), and Ni + Hyp.

Many patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) suffer from cognitive impairment after hospital discharge. Different mechanisms have been implicated as potential causes for this impairment, inter alia cerebral inflammation. A class of drugs with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties are β-HMG-CoA-reductase inhibitors (“statins”).

The protean chemical properties of mercury have long made it attractive for diverse applications, but its toxicity requires great care in its use, disposal, and recycling. Mercury occurs in multiple chemical forms, and the molecular basis for the distinct toxicity of its various forms is only partly understood. Global transcriptomics applied over time can reveal how a cell recognizes a toxicant and what cellular subsystems it marshals to repair and recover from the damage. The longitudinal effects on the transcriptome of exponential phase E.

Regulatory adjustments to acute and chronic temperature changes are highly important for aquatic ectotherms because temperature affects their metabolic rate as well as the already low oxygen concentration in water, which can upset their energy balance.
