  • Ebook "Optimal thinning within the faustmann approach" introduction of mutual interdependencies between the trees growing in a stand and the opportunity to harvest trees prior to the rotation age, optimal thinning regimes can be derived and analyzed. The implications of the proposed model are thoroughly discussed against the background of practical forest management decisions. The author closes with adaptations to the problems of the management of mixed, multiple-use and uneven-aged stands and entire forests.

  • Part 1 of Adaptation to climate change presents a framework for making sense of the range of choices facing humanity, structured around resilience (stability), transition (incremental social change and the exercising of existing rights), and transformation (new rights claims and changes in political regimes).

  • The paper adapted Palley’s (2017) notion of policy lock-in and lock-out via hysteresis to propose an entrenchment spiral as a potential mechanism leading to the current degree of coal and fossil fuel extraction entrenchment in Colombia. The paper concludes that the phase-in of LSCE and FE was facilitated by the combination of masking and securitization strategies used by an incumbency regime closely associated with state capture.

  • Understanding the genetic architecture of temperature adaptation is key for characterizing and predicting the effect of climate change on natural populations. One particularly promising approach is Evolve and Resequence, which combines advantages of experimental evolution such as time series, replicate populations, and controlled environmental conditions, with whole genome sequencing.

  • Viral populations are complex, dynamic, and fast evolving. The evolution of groups of closely related viruses in a competitive environment is termed quasispecies. To fully understand the role that quasispecies play in viral evolution, characterizing the trajectories of viral genotypes in an evolving population is the key. In particular, longrange haplotype information for thousands of individual viruses is critical; yet generating this information is non-trivial.

  • Dong Nai Province has abundant surface and groundwater resources. However, in recent years, due to the impact of climate change, there have been unusual changes, hot weather has occurred in the rainy season, rainfall has been distributed. Climate change strongly affects water resources in all aspects: flooding, changing water levels, saline intrusion ... Changes in water resources will affect related areas: changes in exploitation, using and managing, adjusting and changing policies and laws related to water resources.

  • The physiological responses, dry matter and water intake of Sahiwal and Karan Fries (Holstein-Friesian X Tharparkar) heifers were monitored under two feeding regimes i.e. feeding regime-1 (NRC, 2001) and feeding regime-2 (15 % higher energy than NRC 2001, by supplementation of molasses). Six each of healthy heifers of Sahiwal and Karan Fries (18-24 month) were selected from ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute (ICAR-NDRI), Karnal. Before start of actual experiment, the animals were given 15 days adaptation period on both the feeding regime.

  • An experiment was conducted to study influence of physiological parameters like temperature, pH and light period on growth and sporuation of Macrophomina phaseolina, the incident of stem and root rot of sesame. It is found that, the pathogen grew best at neutral pH i.e. pH 6.5 (285.8 mg) followed by pH 7 (278.0 mg). The temperature of 350 C is best for mycelial growth of M. phaseolina followed by 300 C while no growth was found at lower temperatures. The growth of fungus reduces as the temperature increases or decreases.

  • The present investigation was aimed to study the effect of vitamin C on electrolyte concentrations in blood and urine in water deprived goats during summer and winter seasons. Eighteen adult male goats were selected for the experiment during both seasons. In each season, there were two treatment groups: T1 and T2 group. In T1 group, water was restricted and subdivided into three experimental periods: in period 1 (day 1 to 7), goats were adapted to the water restriction regime by limiting access to water gradually from 15 to 3 hour per day.

During the experiment, 5 salt regimes were maintained: 18 (control), 50, 100, 150, and 200 mM NaCl. Salinity adversely affected all growth shoot length and leaves per plant.

  • Petroleum taxation is the universal instrument through which governments seek to determine the crucial balance between the financial interests of the oil companies and the owners of the resource. This book addresses how governments have and continue to approach this problem, the impacts of different policy choices and how these are being adapted to changing business conditions. Carole Nakhle presents the reader with an illuminating and robust analysis of the entire taxation story, from the basic theoretical considerations through to advanced computations applied to various tax regimes....

  • We propose a new design for highly concurrent Internet services, which we call the staged event-driven architecture (SEDA). SEDA is intended to support massive concurrency demands and simplify the construction of well-conditioned services. In SEDA, applications consist of a network of event-driven stages connected by explicit queues. This architecture allows services to be well-conditioned to load, preventing resources from being overcommitted when demand exceeds service capacity.

  • The policy implications of these trade-offs are intimately related to those that surround the debate on the treatment of systemically important financial institutions (SIFIs) viewed as too-important-to-fail (TITF). The growing complexity and interconnectedness of financial institutions, coupled with the lack of effective cross-border resolution regimes, have undermined market discipline, contributed to excessive risk taking, and compromised the ability of home and host authorities to cope with the failure of TITF institutions.

  • The picture of the market that results from our experiments, surprisingly, confirms both the efficient- market academic view and the traders’ view. But each is valid under different circumstances—in different regimes. In both circumstances, we initiate our traders with heterogeneous beliefs clustered randomly in an interval near homogeneous rational expectations. We find that if our agents adapt their forecasts very slowly to new observations of the market’s behavior, the market converges to a rational-expectations regimes.

  • If, on the other hand, we allow the traders to adapt to new market observations at a more realistic rate, heterogeneous beliefs persist, and the market self-organizes into a complex regime. A rich “market psychology”—a rich set of expectations—becomes observable. Technical trading emerges as a profitable activity, and temporary bubbles and crashes occur from time to time. Trading volume is high, with times of quiescence alternating with times of intense market activity.
