Patient education, advice on returning to normal activities and (home-based) exercise therapy are established treatment options for patients with non-specific low back pain (LBP). However, the effectiveness of physiotherapy interventions on physical functioning and prevention of recurrent events largely depends on patient self-management, adherence to prescribed (home-based) exercises and recommended physical activity behaviour.

Although electronic monitoring is the “gold standard” for adherence monitoring, the range of inhaler devices on the market exceeds the availability of appropriate monitoring devices. Simple tools, applicable across a range of inhalers, are needed to assess patients’ adherence to prescribed inhaled medication. This study reports on the validation of an Inhaler Adherence Questionnaire (IAQ).

Randomised controlled trial of a homebased physical activity intervention in breast cancer survivors
To improve adherence to physical activity (PA), behavioural support in the form of behavioural change counselling may be necessary. However, limited evidence of the effectiveness of home-based PA combined with counselling in breast cancer patients exists.

Dysphagia is a significant side-effect following treatment for head and neck cancers, yet poor adherence to swallowing exercises is frequently reported in intervention studies. Behaviour change techniques (BCTs) can be used to improve adherence, but no review to date has described the techniques or indicated which may be more associated with improved swallowing outcomes.

Antimicrobial resistance results from inappropriate use of antibiotics and makes common or life-threatening infections more difficult or sometimes impossible to treat. Proper adherence to antibiotic therapy is one among several measures required to prevent antimicrobial resistance. Knowledge of personality traits could help in identifying patients who need support with their adherence behaviour.

Official policies for SME development can be evaluated against their impact upon enterprise culture, start-up, survival and growth of SMEs, and stakeholder empathy. Each of these criteria feeds off the others. Enterprise culture will be strong where there are high rates of SME growth. Where SMEs are dominant features in the local and regional economic and social environment, stakeholders themselves will be influenced and will adjust their behaviour accordingly. This template of culture and business and stakeholder development may be used in very different country contexts.

In those situations where an individual will have visitors in the home, refuses to wear a mask or cover his/her mouth when coughing, and/or is less likely to adhere to an anti-TB treatment regimen because of drug or alcohol addiction, it may be prudent to be more conservative and keep the patient in the hospital until sputum is AFB smear-negative. The individual may be transferred to another facility while still AFB smear positive, as long as it is to an AII room. The individual should be transported with appropriate respiratory precautions....

Various health, education, and youth organisations and adolescence researchers have defined and categorised key skills in different ways. Despite these differences, experts and practitioners agree that the term “life skills” typically includes the skills listed in the preceding definition. To these we have added advocacy skills, because they are important in personal and collective efforts to make a strong case for behaviours and conditions that are conducive to health. (For a case study on advocacy skills, see Section 2.2).

The content of skills-based health education is a clear delineation of specific knowledge, attitudes, and skills, including life skills, that young people will be helped to acquire so they might adopt behaviours or create the conditions described in the objectives. Once the content is delineated, methods are chosen that are most suitable to the content. For example, lectures are suitable methods for helping students acquire accurate knowledge; discussions are suitable for influencing attitudes; and role plays are suitable for developing skills.

The ASRM meeting produced evidence that the current oversight of ART could be improved by the addition of insurance coverage for infertility treatments. Such coverage could promote the most medically appropriate procedures and reduce the incidence of multiple births with their accompanying risks and costs. Insurance coverage for infertility could also strengthen existing oversight and quality controls by requiring adherence to ASRM guidelines or performance of ART procedures only at clinics subject to SART standards.
