The formation of blood vessels within solid tumors directly contributes to cancer growth and metastasis. Until recently, tumor vasculature was thought to occur exclusively via endothelial cell (EC) lined structures (i.e. angiogenesis), but a second source of tumor vasculature arises from the cancer cells themselves, a process known as vasculogenic mimicry (VM).

Carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecule 1 (CEACAM1) is a multifunctional Ig-like cell adhesion molecule that has a wide range of biological functions. According to previous reports, serum CEACAM1 is dysregulated in different malignant tumours and associated with tumour progression.

Focal Adhesion Kinase (FAK) is a 125 kDa non-receptor kinase that plays a major role in cancer cell survival and metastasis. Methods: We performed computer modeling of the p53 peptide containing the site of interaction with FAK, predicted the peptide structure and docked it into the three-dimensional structure of the N-terminal domain of FAK involved in the complex with p53.

Primary and secondary microbial adhesion onto solid surfaces has been the onset of development of a mature biofilm in aqueous environments that is predominantly the mode of bacterial contamination and spread of diseases. Adhesion and co-adhesion assays are therefore useful in understanding the adhesive interactions between microorganism and its surfaces. Various factors influence cell adhesion and biofilm formation, depending on aqueous medium and the type of microorganism in place.

The present study was undertaken to investigate the prevalence of etiological agents associated with hydrosalpinx in commercial layer flocks for a period of three years (2005 to 2007) by serology. Hydrosalpinx was observed in birds of 41-80 week age group and was accounted to 18.72 per cent of the birds investigated for oviduct abnormalities. In the affected flocks morbidity, egg production drop and mortality were 1 to 10, 2 to 4 and 0 to 0.5 per cent, respectively.

Candida albicans proteins located on the cell wall and in the cytoplasm have gained great attention because they are not only involved in cellular metabolism and the maintenance of integrity but also interact with host immune systems. Previous research has reported that enolase from C. albicans exhibits high immunogenicity and effectively protects mice against disseminated candidiasis. In this study, alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) of C.

HR12 is anovel farnesyltransferase inhibitor (FTI).Wehave shown previously that HR12 induces phenotypic reversion of H-ras V12 -transformed Rat1 (Rat1/ras) fibroblasts. This reversion was characterized by formation of cell–cell con-tacts, focal adhesions and stress fibers. Here we show that HR12 inhibits anchorage independent and dependent growth of Rat1/ras cells. HR12 also suppresses motility and proliferation of Rat1/ras cells, in a wound healing assay. Rat1 fibroblasts transformed with myristoylated H-ras V12 (Rat1/myr-ras) were resistant to HR12....

The interaction between cell-adhesion molecules CD2 and CD58 is critical for an immune response. Modulation or inhibition of these interactions has been shown to be thera-peuticallyuseful. Synthetic 12-mer linear and cyclic peptides, and cyclic hexapeptides based on rat CD2 protein, were designed tomodulateCD2–CD58 interaction. The synthetic peptides effectively blocked the interaction between CD2– CD58 proteins as demonstrated by antibody binding, E-rosetting and heterotypic adhesion assays. ...

Corticosteroids are often used as an adjunct in the treatment of various forms of tuberculosis (TB) and for the prevention of complications, such as constrictive pericarditis, hydrocephalus, focal neurological deficits, pleural adhesions, and intestinal strictures. Notwithstanding, they have been proven in clinical trials to improve the following outcomes only — death or disability in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-seronegative patients with tubercular meningitis and tubercular pericarditis.

Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) plays an important role in innate immunity. The role of TLR4 in stretched cardiomyocytes is not known. We sought to investigate whether mechanical stretch could regulate TLR4 expression, as well as the possible molecular mechanisms and signal pathways mediating the expression of TLR4 by cyclic mechanical stretch in cardiomyocytes. Methods: Neonatal Wistar rat cardiomyocytes grown on a flexible membrane base were stretched by vacuum to 20% of maximum elongation at 60 cycles/min.
