Advance generation population

Major advances in genotyping technology have generated high-density maps of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers that provide an unprecedented opportunity to identify genes underlying complex traits. Several family-based statistical methods showing robust population stratification have been developed to test the association between multiple markers and disease-susceptibility genes.

Multi-parent populations (MPPs) are important resources for studying plant genetic architecture and detecting quantitative trait loci (QTLs). In MPPs, the QTL effects can show various levels of allelic diversity, which can be an important factor influencing the detection of QTLs.

Multi-parent advanced generation intercross (MAGIC) populations are a newly established tool to dissect quantitative traits. We developed the high resolution MAGIC wheat population WM-800, consisting of 910 F4:6 lines derived from intercrossing eight recently released European winter wheat cultivars.

Improving cotton fiber length without reducing yield is one of the major goals of cotton breeding. However, genetic improvement of cotton fiber length by breeding has been a challenge due to the narrow genetic diversity of modern cotton cultivars and negative correlations between fiber quality and yield traits.

Common bean is an important staple crop in the tropics of Africa, Asia and the Americas. Particularly smallholder farmers rely on bean as a source for calories, protein and micronutrients. Drought is a major production constraint for common bean, a situation that will be aggravated with current climate change scenarios.

Hepatitis C (HCV) and many other RNA viruses exist as rapidly mutating quasi-species populations in a single infected host. High throughput characterization of full genome, within-host variants is still not possible despite advances in next generation sequencing.

Anemia is thought to affect up to 1.6 billion people worldwide. One of the major contributors to low iron (Fe) absorption is a higher proportion of cereals compared to meats and pulse crops in people’s diets.

At the same time, the breeding lines from the advanced generations are also used as parental lines for developing commercially exploitable heterotic hybrids. But, most often the source of early generations i.e., F3, F4, F5 and F6 segregating populations offer wider opportunities for achieving high success, because of wider genetic base.

The STriTuVaD project, funded by Horizon 2020, aims to test through a Phase IIb clinical trial one of the most advanced therapeutic vaccines against tuberculosis. As part of this initiative, we have developed a strategy for generating in silico patients consistent with target population characteristics, which can then be used in combination with in vivo data on an augmented clinical trial.

The success of most crop improvement programs depends on variability and heritability of desirable traits. An investigation was carried out during kharif 2016 at Botanical garden, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, India to assess the extent of variability generated by hybridization and to estimate the heritability and genetic advance as percent of mean for seed cotton yield and its component traits in F2 generation of cross QTP 16 × ASa 151. The segregating population thus obtained was evaluated for eight quantitative traits.

With the advance of next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies, a large number of insertion and deletion (indel) variants have been identified in human populations. Despite much research into variant calling, it has been found that a non-negligible proportion of the identified indel variants might be false positives due to sequencing errors, artifacts caused by ambiguous alignments, and annotation errors.

Advances in single cell genomics provide a way of routinely generating transcriptomics data at the single cell level. A frequent requirement of single cell expression analysis is the identification of novel patterns of heterogeneity across single cells that might explain complex cellular states or tissue composition.

An experiment was conducted on genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance in wheat population including 48 F1’s + 48 F2’s + 16 parents in RBD during Rabi 2014-15. Analysis of variance for the design of experiments revealed that mean squares due to treatments were highly significant for all the ten characters studied, while mean squares due to replications were non-significant in both F1 and F2 generations.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal) is a potent medicinal plant originated in the Indian sub continent and is used in traditional systems of medicine globally. Pure lines form an important genetic resource for improvement of yield and quality. In the present study, a set of 327 (DWS1-DWS327) pure lines were developed from JA134 out crossed population through individual plant selection, selfing and generation advancement for the first time in Ashwagandha.

In the present investigation, estimates of genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance were assessed for nine different characters in the F3 population derived from four groundnut crosses, viz., CO 7 × VRI Gn 6, TMV 2 × VRI Gn 6, TMV Gn 13 × VRI Gn 6 and VRI 2 × VRI Gn 6. Considering the mean performance, the cross derivative TMV Gn 13 × VRI Gn 6 registered superiority for the characters viz., 100-pod weight (g), 100- kernel weight (g) and sound mature kernel (%).

Plants in nature are constantly exposed to a variety of abiotic and biotic stresses which limits their growth and production. Enhancing crop yield and production to feed exponentially growing global population in a sustainable manner by reduced chemical fertilization and agrochemicals will be a big challenge. Recently, the targeted application of beneficial plant microbiome and their cocktails to counteract abiotic and biotic stress is gaining momentum and becomes an exciting frontier of research.
