Aerodynamic drag

  • The increasing use of Intelligent Transport System (ITS) can enable very close vehicle spacings which generally results in a net drag reduction for the resulting convoys. The majority of vehicle development has, to date, been for vehicles in isolation, thus the study of interaction effects is becoming increasingly important. The main objective of this research is to investigate the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for understanding convoy aerodynamics and to further the understanding of airflow interaction between vehicles via CFD.

  • In this research the effect of ground proximity on the lift, drag and moment coefficients of inverted, two-dimensional aerofoils was investigated. The purpose of the study was to examine the effect ground proximity on aerofoils post stall, in an effort to evaluate the use of active aerodynamics to increase the performance of a race car. The aerofoils were tested at angles of attack ranging from 0° – 135°. The tests were performed at a Reynolds number of 2.16 x 105 based on chord length. Forces were calculated via the use of pressure taps along the centreline of the aerofoils.

  • In this paper, we present a research on applying a commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code to determine interaction effect between hull and accommodation on wind drag of a container ship. For the high superstructure and large windward area ships such as container, wind drag acting on hull accounts for a large amount of total resistance.

  • The purpose of the research is to determine and compare the impact of some factors on aerodynamic drag force during the inflation of a parachute. The canopy’s shape (flat circular type and extended skirt 10% flat type), of the length of suspension lines (be in proportion to nominal diameter from 0.6 to 1.5) are considered. Measurement of the drag force of the parachute models is carried out in an open return wind tunnel.

  • The test used Reynolds number 6.577 x 103 on a 1: 100 scale model. Testing was conducted at varying the angle of attack of 0° - 60°. The flow visualization was measured using dye injection method. The result of the research using GAMA water tunnel showed the aerodynamic force and vortex dynamics phenomenon that showed the difference in lift and drag coefficients. The results of this visualization showed the formation of vortex nuclei that occur in the wings of the aircraft model.

  • The forces and moments the vehicle receives from the surrounding air depend more on the shape of the body than on the characteristics of the chassis. A detailed study of motor vehicle aerodynamics is thus beyond the scope of a book dealing with the automotive chassis. However, aerodynamic forces and moments have a large influence on the longitudinal performance of the vehicle, its handling and even its comfort, so it is not possible to neglect them altogether.
