  • If we consider that aerodynamics, from a modern point of view, is a branch of physics that study physical laws and their applications, regarding the displacement of a body into a fluid, such concept could be applied to any body moving in a fluid at rest or any fluid moving around a body at rest. The general concept outlined above is applicable to planes; cars; boats; big ships; missiles; wind energy generators; small flying objects, like UAVs; etc.

  • Helicopter aerodynamics is the branch of physics dealing with the forces and pressures exerted by air in motion. The atmosphere, the mass of air, which completely envelops the earth, is composed of varying and nonvarying constituents. The nonvarying constituents include oxygen (21%) and nitrogen (78%). The varying constituents include CO2, argon, hydrogen, helium, neon, krypton, and water vapor, which will vary from negligible amounts to approximately 4% by volume (100% relative humidity). Air is a fluid and is affected by changes in temperature, pressure, and humidity....

  • A brief introduction is provided in this section about Aerodynamics in general. However, the focus is mainly on low speed flow. Concepts have been introduced without too much rigor. This would hopefully help the reader to get a first glimpse of the subject without getting into too many details. Figures have been used to explain concepts wherever possible. Lengthy derivations have been avoided because reference books could be used for that purpose. Main equations to remember have been provided straight away with relevant explanation....

  • In this paper, a commercial CFD code, ANSYS-Fluent has been used to investigate the effect of mesh number generated in the computed domain on the CFD aerodynamic performances of a container ship. A full-scale model of the 1200TEU container ship has been chosen as a reference model in the computation. Five different mesh numbers for the same dimension domain have been used and the CFD aerodynamic performances of the above water surface hull of the ship have been shown.

  • Knowledge about the morphological adaptations of body and wing in birds helps to know about their aerodynamic performance. The present study was aimed to analyze the morphometry of the wing of the blue and yellow macaw (Ara ararauna) with reference to aerodynamics. Various aerodynamic measurements namely body weight, body length, wing span, wing area, wing load and aspect ratio were measured in three adult male birds. The wings were short, elliptical and rounded.

  • This study describes an effectively analytic methodology to investigate the aerodynamic performance of H vertical axis wind turbine (H-VAWT). An in-house code based on double multiple stream tube theory (DMST) coupled with dynamic stall and wake correction is implemented to estimate the power coefficient. Design optimization of airfoil shape is conducted to study the influences of the dynamic stall and turbulent wakes.

  • The aim of this study is to examine the flow through unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) including the main wing, tail and body and to calculate the aerodynamic force on the horizontal tail when rotating the elevator using the Fluent software for the viscous flows. Small disturbance theory was used to calculate the longitudinal stability of the UAV when controlling the elevator. Flying qualities are assessed to show that changes in the aerodynamic characteristics of the wing, tail, fuselage and configuration of the UAV may be required.
