  • Morphing wings were once in the common in early aviation however due to a lack of strong and lightweight materials they were abandoned in favour of conventional wings. Due to the recent advances in smart technologies, morphing wings has become of interest in aviation. The thesis "Aerodynamic Performance Comparison of a Conventional UAV Wing and a FishBAC Morphing Wing" proposes the use of internal mechanisms to promote morphing in a wing to increase aerodynamic performance as opposed to the smart technologies.

  • PM2.5 is the particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 µm or less, which is the root cause of haze event. Although there is no detailed standard for haze episode, haze is generally defined as a phenomenon characterized by visibility of ~8km, high concentration of particulate matter, relative humidity of less than 90%, following by certain weather conditions of very low wind speed of < 1 m/s and suppressed planetary boundary layer height.

  • In this paper, we present a research on applying a commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code to determine interaction effect between hull and accommodation on wind drag of a container ship. For the high superstructure and large windward area ships such as container, wind drag acting on hull accounts for a large amount of total resistance.

  • The purpose of the research is to determine and compare the impact of some factors on aerodynamic drag force during the inflation of a parachute. The canopy’s shape (flat circular type and extended skirt 10% flat type), of the length of suspension lines (be in proportion to nominal diameter from 0.6 to 1.5) are considered. Measurement of the drag force of the parachute models is carried out in an open return wind tunnel.

  • In this paper, a robust hierarchical method for trajectory tracking control of a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) subjected to parameter uncertainties and external disturbances is presented. A robust control scheme based on a fast nonsingular terminal sliding mode strategy is designed to achieve fast response and excellent tracking accuracy. Moreover, a radial basis function artificial neural network with online adaptive schemes to estimate unknown aerodynamic parameters and external disturbances is developed to improve the control performance and reduce the chattering phenomenon.

  • The aim of this study is to examine the flow through unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) including the main wing, tail and body and to calculate the aerodynamic force on the horizontal tail when rotating the elevator using the Fluent software for the viscous flows. Small disturbance theory was used to calculate the longitudinal stability of the UAV when controlling the elevator. Flying qualities are assessed to show that changes in the aerodynamic characteristics of the wing, tail, fuselage and configuration of the UAV may be required.

  • The main objective of this paper is to investigate the responses of the inclined cable due to rain-wind induced vibration (RWIV) considering the bending stiffness and support excitation of the cable. The single-degree-offreedom (SDOF) model is employed to determine the aerodynamic forces. The 3D model of a cable subjected to RWIV is developed using the linear theory of the cable oscillation and the central difference algorithm in which the influences of wind speed change according to the height above the ground, bending stiffness, and support excitation of the cable are considered.
