African Rice

Climate change and ozone depletion have caused increased ultraviolet B (UVB; 280-315nm) radiation levels on earth, which has been predicted to cause decreased growth and yield of various crops, including rice, the most important staple food worldwide. UVB radiation sensitivity varies extensively in Asian rice (Oryza sativa L.) and African rice (Oryza glaberrima Steud. and Oryza barthii A. Chev.) cultivars, and the activity of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer (CPD) photolyase that repairs UVB-induced CPD is an essential factor underlying UVB sensitivity in rice.

Rice yellow mottle virus (RYMV) is a major rice pathogen in Africa. Three resistance genes, i.e. RYMV1, RYMV2 and RYMV3, have been previously described. RYMV1 encodes the translation initiation factor eIF(iso)4G1 and the best candidate genes for RYMV2 and RYMV3 encode a homolog of an Arabidopsis nucleoporin (CPR5) and a nucleotide-binding domain and leucine-rich repeat containing domain (NLR) protein, respectively.

Bacterial blight of rice, caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo), is a devastating rice disease in Southeast Asia and West Africa. OsSWEET14, encoding a sugar transporter, is known to be a major susceptible gene of bacterial blight targeted by four different transcription activator-like (TAL) effectors from either Asian or African Xoo strains.

For the establishment of the distinctness among 31 accessions of Oryza glaberrima, eight morphological traits following Distinctness, Uniformity and Stability test (DUS) studied. Out of 31 accessions studied, two accessions viz., EC861804, EC861805 were found to be highly distinct as they possessed distinct traits namely purple split ligule, medium green leaves, erect flag leaf, presence of awn along with lodging tolerance indicating their usefulness as donors for crop improvement programmes. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences for all the characters studied.

African marigold (Tagetes erecta L.) is a herbaceous annual flowering plant belonging to family Asteraceae. Apart from its popular use in landscape gardening and garland making, it is now gaining popularity as a natural source of food colour. It is found in different colour shades of yellow and orange with different fragrance. A study was conducted in summer rice fallows of Wayanad during 2016-17 to evaluate the performance of 3 hybrids of marigold based on vegetative, flowering and yield characters.

In India, rice, wheat and maize yields per hectare of land have increased three to four fold between 1950 and 2010, mainly due to the adoption of improved agronomic practices. Egg production now ranges between 310–320 per annum per bird. Similarly, feed conversion efficiency in broilers is also at par with developed nations and Indian poultry farmers are now more conscious of the need to increase profits by cutting costs and improving productivity. Balancing of nutrients in poultry rations along with improved mineral supplementation has led to this improved productivity.
