In India, presently about 35 to 40 per cent of the onion is estimated to be lost as postharvest losses during various operations including handling and storage. Serious losses occur during storage due to sprouting and rotting. Keeping this in view, an investigation was carried out to study the effect of different packing and storage methods on storage life of aggregatum onion cv. CO on 5.

Multiplier onion or Aggregatum onion (Allium cepa var. aggregatum) is one of the important bulbous vegetable cultivated in India. Onion is mainly propagated through bulbs and approximately 1000 kg of bulb is required for planting in one hectare of area. Huge quantities of onion bulbs are wasted for propagation purpose. By switching over from bulb propagation method to seed, there is a saving of seed bulb to a tune of 1000 kg/ha. As Aggregatum onion is being cultivated in 30,000 hectares in Tamil Nadu, a saving of 30,000 tonnes bulbs could be obtained.

In forced ventilated storage method the physiological weight loss was recorded highest in top compartment as 27.41 per cent and least at 27.29 per cent in bottom compartment during 90 days of storage. During the 90 days of storage, sprouting loss was 5 per cent in natural ventilated structure was observed as minimum loss and maximum loss was recorded in 11.5 per cent in forced ventilated storage structure.

Basal rot is a major fungal disease that occurs in onion crop caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cepae (Hanazawa) Snyder &Hansen. Severe yield losses occur in the onion crop due to the rotting of bulbs. Survey was conducted in onion growing areas of Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Tenkasi districts and five isolates of Fusarium were isolated under in vitro. The isolates were confirmed by both morphological and cultural characters.

Shallot, Allium cepa var aggregatum L. (Alliaceae) is one of the major bulbous vegetable grown both as garden and field crop in India. The major leaf feeding insect pests of onion, Spodoptera exigua, Spodoptera litura, Helicoverpa armigera and the recently invasive insect Spodoptera frugiperda were causing destructive damage to the plant and made economic yield loss. Food consumption indices were studied under laboratory condition at room temperature 28 ± 20C and it is one of the parameter to identify the damage potential of insects.
