  • In food animal agriculture, there is a need to identify the mechanisms that can improve the efficiency of muscle growth and protein accretion. Callipyge sheep provide excellent machinery since the up-regulation of DLK1 and RTL1 results in extreme postnatal muscle hypertrophy in distinct muscles. The aim of this study is to distinguish the genes that directly respond to DLK1 and RTL1 signaling from the genes that change as the result of muscle specific effects.

  • The human population on the planet is estimated to reach 9 billion by 2050; this requires significant increase of food production to meet the demands. Intensified farming systems have been identified as a viable means to increase grain production. Crop production inputs include carbon investment in the form of energy, for the manufacture and use of farm machinery, synthetic fertilizers, crop protection chemicals such as herbicides, insecticides and fungicides, groundwater irrigation and the direct use of fuel in farm operations.

  • The constraint of labour shortage resulted in modern heavy machineries which form a hard pan on agricultural field. A subsoiler plough is famous for breaking hardpan and working at higher depths. On overview of effects of subsoiler on field is studied. The subsoiler has better performance on improving soil properties such as bulk density, porosity, strength and infiltration rates. The subsoiling also has its effects on root system of plants positively. The crop yields were seen positive or no correlation on subsoiling.

  • Escalated food demands propelled by the ever increasing population demands for increase in crop production. But problems like labour shortages, high input costs and conventional farming practices makes agriculture economically unviable and resulted in its decline, especially in vulnerable communities of the developing world. Use of heavy machinery has been in the increase to tackle the problems of labour shortages but have adverse effects on environment due to soil compaction and the adverse effect on global warming owing to high fossil fuel use.

  • The use of resource management technologies such as zero tillage, which can affect the soil properties, can restore soil health that is degrading at a rapid pace due to intensive agriculture, inefficient and imbalanced use of fertilisers, high-yielding crops, the use of heavy machinery, excessive tillage, etc. The health of the soil can be measured by the capacity of microorganisms that can act as early warning signals. To improve soil quality, zero tillage is recommended globally and has significant effects on soil microbial communities.

  • The effect of operational parameters on selected tillage tools or tines were studied by using instrumented soilbin at Department of Farm Machinery and Power Engineering, College of Agricultural Engineering, Raichur (Karnataka). The experiment was conducted in sandy clay loam soil to study the effect of variation of forward speed (3, 4 and 5 km/h), operating depth (5, 10 and 15 cm) and type of tools (Sweep-1, Sweep-2 and Shovel-1) on draft, specific draft, soil disturbance parameters and tool width to furrow width ratio. The test was conducted in a 21 m long, 2 m wide and 1 m deep soilbin.

  • India is facing various challenges in agriculture sector for sustaining soil fertility and food grains production, besides environmental degradation and food security of the country in the event of ever increasing demands of food grains production with limited cultivable land. Cultivable land and maintaining its soil fertility are one of the major tasks which supports about 17.6% of its population and leads to fact that, our natural resources are under considerable strain. Food grains are a major source of energy and are thus are vital for food and nutritional security.

  • Economic growth in India agricultural sector lags behind growth in industry and services, creating an ever widening rural-urban income gap. Agricultural mechanization plays a key role in improving agricultural production and productivity in developing countries. The average farm size in India is small 1.16 hand small and marginal land holdings less than 2.0 ha account for 85% of land holdings. Mechanization small and non-contiguous group of small farms is against economics of scale for individual ownership of farm machinery.

  • Conservation Agriculture (CA) enhances productivity and maintains the environmental safety and ecological sustainability. According to majority of the respondents, inadequate knowledge on CA as a package was perceived to be the major constraint in adoption of CA. Biophysical constraints predominantly included uncertain monsoon and lack of availability of labour. Technological constraints such as non-availability of desired CA technologies and machineries and policy constraints such as lack of priority, promotion and incentives for adoption were also considered as major constraints.

  • Generally, energy conservation and fuel savings are related to the amount of reduction in tillage and may be quite substantial with no-tillage. Less machinery is required for reduced tillage, which contributes to the decrease in overall energy used in the crop production. No-tillage, minimum tillage and mulching have been broadly used in the modern agriculture operations which had showed excellent results in past as well as in present. These techniques have provided obvious benefits of soil and water conservation on sloping farm-land in the hill regions.
