Agro-met advisory

Regulating the erratic weather on a large scale is beyond human control. It is possible to adapt to or mitigate the ill effects of weather through appropriate Agromet advisories (AAS). The AAS are issued twice in a week, along with weather forecast for next 5 days covering the entire Eastern Dry Zone of Karnataka. Usability calculated for forecasts issued on rainfall, temperature and cloud cover from 2011 to 2016, ranged from 51 to 77 percent.

Agrometeorological Field Unit (AMFU) disseminating agromet advisory bulletin (AAB) are embraced three parts viz., weather condition, crop information and weather based agro advisories. This study enlightens the qualitative and quantitative aspect and gaps between providers and end users of AAB. The AAB issued by 7 AMFU stations was collected for the period 5 years (2007-2011) from IMD, Pune and SAU‟s of 7 states. The substantial variation in the format of issued AAB by all the stations was observed and formats are not found easily usable to print media, SMS through multimedia.

The importance of Gramin Krishi Mausam Sewa is well recognized in present agricultural scenario which needs sustainable development to feed rapidly growing population of the nation. Weather based agriculture is highly beneficial for the farmers of India to sustain their profession for earning bread and butter. The advisory helps them to optimize the use of available resources for maximization of their profit. When the forecast is proved correct it gives benefit to the farmers, if it is not so, then there is hardly any loss to the farmers.

Agriculture is the backbone of Indian economy. Agriculture and its activities are mostly depends upon weather parameters. In this scenario weather based agricultural bulletin may create an effort to help the farming community to improve their decision making ability.

Weather forecast issued by India meteorological department and value added by Met Centre Srinagar was compared with actual weather data recorded at Agrometerological Observatory AMFU-Chatha to assess the validity and accuracy of weather forecast during 2016-17. Various test criteria were used to test the reliability and accuracy of the forecasted weather. The results indicated that correct forecast for rainfall was found to be maximum (99.26 %) in post monsoon season followed by winter season (70.58 %), pre monsoon season (59.23 %) and monsoon season (40.22 %).
