A challenge in the post-GWAS era is to assign function to disease-associated variants. However, available resources do not include all tissues or environmental exposures that are relevant to all diseases. For example, exaggerated bronchoconstriction of airway smooth muscle cells (ASMCs) defines airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), a cardinal feature of asthma.

Biofilm accumulates within the endotracheal tube (ETT) early after intubation. Contaminated secretions in the ETT are associated with increased risk for microbial dissemination in the distal airways and increased resistance to airflow. We evaluated the effectiveness of micro computed tomography (MicroCT) for the quantification of ETT inner volume reduction in critically ill patients.

Small nasotracheal tubes (NTTs) and intranasal compression of the NTT in the nasal cavity may contribute to increasing airway resistance. Since the effects of size, shape, and partial compression of the NTT on airway resistance have not been investigated, values of airway resistance with partial compression of preformed NTTs of various sizes were determined.

Laryngeal mask airways (LMA) are commonly used for airway management. Complications with this device are rare. However, when they do occur, there is a high risk for respiratory problems, necessitating early diagnosis and treatment. We present the first case of a life-threatening abscess spreading in the visceral space caused by a penicillin and metronidazole resistant Prevotella Denticola after the use of an LMA.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an inflammatory disorder partially resistant to glucocorticoids. A reduced histone deacetylase (HDAC) activity has been proposed to explain this resistance. Haemophilus influenzae frequently colonizes the airways of COPD patients, where it enhances inflammation.

The natural history of airway inflammation and symptoms in occupations at risk of asthma is still not fully understood. We aimed to study the evolution during apprenticeship of inflammation markers, bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) and symptoms in at-risk subgroups as defined from measurements of markers made shortly after the start of training.

Untreated Obstructive Sleep Apnea Hypnopnea Syndrome (OSAHS) is a known factor contributing to resistant hypertension (HT). Continuous Positive Airways Pressure (CPAP) is effective to decrease blood pressure (BP) in severe OSAHS.

Increased small airway resistance and decreased lung elasticity contribute to the airflow limitation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The lesion that corresponds to loss of lung elasticity is emphysema; the small airway obstruction is due to inflammatory narrowing and obliteration. Despite their convergence in altered physiology, different mechanisms contribute to these processes.

Severe non-allergic eosinophilic asthma (SNEA) is a rare asthma phenotype associated with severe clinical course, frequent exacerbations, and resistance to therapy, including high steroid doses. The key feature is type 2 inflammation with predominant airway eosinophilia.

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia is a deficiency of the fetal diaphragm resulting in herniation of the abdominal viscera into the thoracic cavity. The best method of respiratory management of congenital diaphragmatic hernia is unclear, but high frequency oscillatory ventilation is often used as the initial ventilator mode for severe congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

The application and development of PDE4 inhibitors for treating asthma or COPD are limited by their side effects, such as nausea, vomiting and gastric hypersecretion. PDE4 inhibitors were reported to reverse xylazine/ketamine-induced anesthesia in rats and triggered vomiting in ferrets.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a spectrum of airway diseases that has chronic bronchitis at one end and emphysema at other end. COPD is the major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Most of the episodes (80%) of AECOPD are triggered by infections mainly affecting the lower respiratory tract by respiratory viruses, atypical bacteria and aerobic Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria.

Sympathetic nerve stimulation induces vasoconstriction and consequent decreases nasal airway resistance. Parasympathetic nerve stimulation on the other hand, promotes secretion from nasal airway glands and nasal congestion. The nasal mucosa also contains nerves of the non-adrenergic, non-cholinergic (NANC)- system. Neuropeptides from the latter nerves (substance P, neurokinin A and K, and calcitonin gene-related peptide) are suspected to play a role in vasodilatation, mucus secretion, plasma extravasation, neurogenic inflammation, and mast cell nerve interactions.

In this cross-sectional study data was obtained from reviewing the files of 1,594 patients who underwent bronchoscopy in Afzalipour Hospital during 2003-2007. These patients had various conditions ranging from chronic cough to abnormal findings on chest xray and hemoptysis and all underwent bronchoscopy due to the doctors’ orders. All cases consented to this study. Their bronchoscopy was done by experts who were skillful at diagnosing bronchial anthracosis. Bronchial anthracosis was characterized by dark pigmentations within airway mucosa found during bronchoscopy.

Events following entry of bacilli: Phagocytosis of M.tuberculosis by alveolar macrophages is the firstevent in the host-pathogen relationship that decidesoutcome of infection. Within 2 to 6 wk of infection,cell-mediated immunity (CMI) develops, and thereis an influx of lymphocytes and activatedmacrophages into the lesion resulting in granulomaformation. The exponential growth of the bacilli ischecked and dead macrophages form a caseum. Thebacilli are contained in the caseous centers of thegranuloma.
