Harvesting microalgae by centrifugation and filtration is very costly, affecting technical and economical feasibility of downstream processing of algal biomas to bioproducts. Flocculation is a potential technique for recovery of algae biomass. Particularly, flocculation using magnetic nanoparticles offers high separation efficiency due to their high surface area and magnetic properties. I

Cultivation technology of Chlorella vulgaris shows great potential in wastewater treatment along with biomass collection for biofuel production. Suspended, autotrophic cultivation at various scales is still the main method to increase algal biomass in different stages of algae technology. In this study, C. vulgaris was cultured to proliferate in a 2 l suspension system to prepare biomass for immobilised cultivation in a biofilm photobioreactor.

A series of batch lab-scale experiments were performed to investigate the performance of dead phosphorylated algal biomass of Spirogyra species for the bioadsorption of Cu +2 ions from aqueous solutions. FT-IR and SEM analyses were performed to characterize the phosphorylated and raw algae. The SEM analysis indicated that the phosphorus content increases by about 5 times. The isotherm equilibrium data indicated that phosphorylation enhances the removal of Cu +2 from water by about 20%. The experimental isotherms fit well to Langmuir models with R 2 values close to 0.99.

The use of microalgae biomass is an alternative solution to the problem of environmental pollution due to heavy metals, one of which is Cr metal in leather tanning liquid waste. However, the ability of biomass to adsorb heavy metals has limitations. Therefore, the algal biomass is immobilized with silica gel in order to obtain a stable structure. This research aims to study the absorption efficiency of Cr (VI) metal by the biomass of Spirulina sp. which is immobilized with silica gel from the tannery liquid waste.

The algae are one among the biomass energy source which can be promising. The microalgae are the diverse organisms which can inhabit in different climatic conditions and adapt themselves and perpetuate forming their own niche. There is need to improve the local flora for biomass and lipid content instead of culturing exotic species. Chlorella the green microalgae, was isolated from fresh water and was characterized through molecular studies using 18s rRNA homology. The study has revealed that isolated species belong to Chlorophytes (green microalgae).

Biosorption of cadmium and lead from aqueous solution by fresh water alga Anabaena sphaerica biomass
The present work represents the biosorption of Cd(II) and Pb(II) from aqueous solution onto the biomass of the blue green alga Anabaena sphaerica as a function of pH, biosorbent dosage, contact time, and initial metal ion concentrations. Freundlich, Langmuir, and Dubinin–Radushkevich (D–R) models were applied to describe the biosorption isotherm of both metals by A. sphaerica biomass. The biosorption isotherms studies indicated that the biosorption of Cd(II) and Pb(II) follows the Langmuir and Freundlish models. The maximum biosorption capacities (qmax) were 111.1 and 121.

The harvested algal biomass contained high nutritive compositions and was a suitable source for functional food (68.32 % protein, 7.32 % lipids and low heavy metal concentration). The obtained results indicated that the My An mineral water source is indeed a suitable water source for producing Spirulina platensis biomass as a functional food for human and animal feed.

To improve the efficiency of algae production process, most studies have focused on selecting algal strains; controlling nutrient, temperatures and pH as well as biomass processing technologies. However, technical innovations in algae cultivation have remained elusive. For this reason, a new technique in cultivation system was studied to determine if it could produce significant quantities of biomass compared to the traditional hydroponic system.
