  • Trianthema portulacastrum L. (Aizoaceae) is a common weed associated with cultivated crops. It is an exotic weed that originated in South Africa and is spreading all over the world. Thirty-five accessions were collected from six populations at Fayoum depression (FD), Egypt. Molecular analyses of start codon targeted (SCoT) markers were performed to identify genotypic variation among collected populations. The effectiveness of employing SCoT markers was demonstrated by the high percentage of polymorphisms.

  • The study accessed the threat level of Mimosa pigra, Eupatorium odoratum and Eichhornia crassipes to flora in Tram Chim National Park by using the tour survey and standard quadrat setting method. Regarding canal and swamp habitats, Eichhornia crassipes had a very high threat level (IVI = 155.80% and the level 4 of association), reaching highest point in the rainy season.

  • Alternanthera philoxeroides (alligator weed) is a highly invasive alien plant that has continuously and successfully expanded from the tropical to the temperate regions of China via asexual reproduction. During this process, the continuous decrease in temperature has been a key limiting environmental factor.

  • Invasion by alien perennial weed Mikania micrantha has created a serious problems in Southeast Asia. This climbing vine possesses very fast growth rate and could multiply from seed and vegetative parts. It climbs on other plants, create a dense cover and block sunlight thereby damage or kill the other plant. It compete for water, soil nutrient and release allele-chemicals inhibiting growth of plants. The weed creates economic loss to plantation, horticultural crops, displaces and kills native vegetation. It is designated as one of the worst invasive plants of the world. M.

  • Urdbean has narrow genetic base due to common ancestry of various superior genotypes, poor plant type and genetic vulnerability to biotic and abiotic stresses. The underutilized related specie, V. umbellata (ricebean), nutritive and resistant to most of the fungal pathogens, is speculated to be potential donor. Therefore, V. mungo and V. umbellata were crossed with a view to introgress alien genes. On inter-specific hybridization, the presence of pre-fertilization barriers and post-fertilization barriers were observed. As, hybrids exhibited reduced germination and sterility.

The region includes three mega-diverse states (Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines); several bio-geographical units (e.g., Malesia, Wallacea, Sundaland, Indo-Burma and the Central Indo-Pacific); and numerous centers of concentration of restricted-range bird, plant and insect species.

  • Plant species that invade an alien area and outgrow the native vegetation, establishing and increasing their own territory, often lead to negative economic, environmental, and social impacts. Even native species can behave like invasive species by their exponential spread. Similarly, not all non-native species are invasive. Many alien invasive species, however, do threaten the health and integrity of our terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.

  • This is a book about plant chemistry written by a herbalist with no claims of being a chemist. Having a driving ambition to understand the nature of herbal medicines—in particular what makes them work—I delved head first into the previously alien world of atoms, molecules and bonds. Having learned enough to be engaged to teach the topic to budding herbalists and naturopaths, I set about formalising the teaching notes—the result is the original (1996) edition of this text.

  • Invasive alien plants are harmful non-native plant species whose introduction or spread threatens the environment, the economy, and society, including human health. They can be introduced into Canada from other countries or continents, or from one region of Canada to another. The current threats posed by invasive alien plants are real and growing. Why are invasive alien plants a problem? The economic cost of invasive alien plants to Canadians is enormous. Weeds in crops and pastures alone cost an estimated $2.2 billion annually.
