  • Leaf spot disease (Alternaria alternata) causes severe foliar damage to niger crop. The isolates of A.alternata were collected from different location and tested for their variability in term of morphological, cultural and pathological variation viz., growth rate, colony colour, aerial mycelium colour, growth pattern, sporulation, conidial size, conidial sepation. In case of growth rate Aa1 and Aa2 was observed very fast growing it cover 70- 73 mm growth within 7 days of inoculation on PDA media.

  • Early blight of potato caused by Alternaria alternata is one of the major diseases causing considerable yield loss. Efficacy of bio-agents was studied and revealed the all four Trichoderma species significantly reduced the mycelial growth of the pathogen over the control by dual culture method. Significantly maximum inhibition of mycelial growth was obtained with T. viride (57.08%) followed by T. azospirillum (50.00%), T. harzianum (43.26%) and T. virens (37.08%) of the pathogen after 48 hours of incubation. In present study, T. viride was observed more inhibitory against A. alternata...

  • A Alternaria leaf spot (ALS) and flower heads spot (FHS) disease of Heliconia rostrata plants is prevalent in India. Heliconias plants are known for their beautiful, brilliant colorful flowering bracts. Breathtaking and unusual flower heads (bracts) rise from clumps of banana like leaves, sometimes very large or slender. They are also known as the birds of paradise which are found mostly in Indian gardens. Symptomatic can be seen on the leaves and flower heads like to be small and circular spots with concentric rings at first which later became irregular lesions.

The disease is responsible for causing huge losses in its successful production. Pathogens isolated from the onion foliar blight symptomatic leaves for two successive cropping seasons were Alternaria alternata, A. porri, A. tenuissima, Stemphylium vesicarium, Cladosporium allii-cepae and Colletotrichum circinans. However, the relative occurrence of the pathogens varied during the cropping season.

  • Leaf blight was observed in anthurium crop in Tamil Nadu and Kerala states of India during 2011-2012. Initially, the symptoms were small circular to irregular brown spots with concentric rings on the leaves that gradually enlarged. Fungal isolates, obtained from infected leaf tissues were grown in pure culture and on the basis of cultural and morphological characteristics and ribosomal DNA spacer sequences, the organism was identified as Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissler. To our knowledge this is the first report of Alternaria leaf blight disease in Anthurium andraeanum in India.

  • Biological control represents an important approach to manage plant diseases. Blights of leaf, panicle and fruits caused by Alternaria alternata and the wilt caused by Fusarium solani are important diseases of litchi. Hence, as an alternative to chemical fungicides, biological control by Trichoderma spp. to manage pathogens of litchi was explored. The aim of this study was to isolate native Trichoderma spp. from litchi orchard ecosystem and to evaluate antagonistic potential and its biological fitness so as to develop a commercial formulation for field application to manage litchi diseases.
