Alternaria blight of rapeseed
-
The incidence and severity of Alternaria blight in rapeseed-mustard fields is greatly influenced by temperature, relative humidity, soil condition at the time of planting, splashing rain, wind velocity, leaf wetness and inoculum density available in the soil (Meena et al., 2004).

Rapeseed-mustard (Brassica juncea L) is an economically prodigious and utile oilseed crop of the world. Potato dextrose agar media was significantly superior over other tested media at 5 and 7 days after inoculation. However it was at par with mustard leaf dextrose agar at 3 days after inoculation and significantly superior over the rest culture media.

In Assam, though large scale survey has not been carried out on the total loss caused by the Alternaria brassicae but reports from farmers’ field about the disease is alarming requiring a full scale study to understand the variability of Alternaria brassicae to help develop management strategies.

The oilseed crops especially rapeseed-mustard play a pivotal role in agricultural economy of the world. In Punjab, the area under cultivation of mustard has been decreased due to Brassica crops are extremely susceptible from some major biotic and abiotic stresses. Alternaria blight caused by Alternaria brassicae is one of the most widespread and destructive fungal disease of rapeseed- mustard throughout the world.

Alternaria blight caused by Alternaria brassicae (Berk.) Sacc. has been reported as one of the most serious threat to the production of rapeseed and mustard which is reflected in various yield attributing factors eventually affecting the yield. The matter is of grave concern as both the crops have economic importance and fetch return to the growers merely on the basis of oil content. The present study was conducted in order to assess yield loss of rapeseed and mustard with respect to various yield attributing factors in various varieties under natural conditions.

Rapeseed-mustard accounts for 19.97 per cent of the total oilseeds production in India and it is one of the major contributors to Yellow Revolution. Their yield losses due to Alternaria blight was reported in the range of 10 to 70 per cent variable. The seed quality, seed size, colour and reduction of oil up to 10 per cent and seed germination ability is also adversely affected due to this disease in addition to quantities yield losses.

Alternaria blight caused by Alternaria brassicae (Berk) Sacc. and A. brassicicola (Schw) Wiltshire is one of the most common and destructive disease of rapeseedmustard. The experiments were conducted under field condition to develop effective management strategies for this disease through evaluation of genotypes for resistance and application of fungicide, bio-agents and botanical.

India is one of the largest rapeseed–mustard growing countries in the world occupying the third position in area and in production after China and Canada with 12% of world’s total production. Rapeseed-mustard is the second most important oilseed crop in the country after groundnut and accounts for nearly 30.7% of the total oilseed production in the country. At global level rapeseed–mustard is cultivated on 36.15 m ha with production of 71.09 MT. Alternaria blight caused by Alternaria brassicae and Alternaria brassicicola has become one of the important diseases of this crop in the country.

Considerable losses caused by Alternaria blight on the oilseed crop rapeseed-mustard annually caused by Alternaria brassicae and Alternaria brassicicola. The study was conducted with the aim to assess tolerant sources of mustard lines against dark spot and to ascertain the optimum time of screening against the disease in Bihar region. We screened 50 lines of mustard against Alternaria blight under natural incidence in the year 2015-16 and 2016-17 using Area Under Disease Progress Curve (AUDPC).
