Alternaria brassicicola
-
Alternaria brassicae, a necrotrophic pathogen, causes Alternaria Leaf Spot, one of the economically important diseases of Brassica crops. Many other Alternaria spp. such as A. brassicicola and A. alternata are known to cause secondary infections in the A. brassicae-infected Brassicas.

The incidence and severity of Alternaria blight in rapeseed-mustard fields is greatly influenced by temperature, relative humidity, soil condition at the time of planting, splashing rain, wind velocity, leaf wetness and inoculum density available in the soil (Meena et al., 2004).

Cabbage is a cool season crop grown in temperate regions and belongs to family Brassicaceae. In Kerala, cabbage is grown in an area of 197 ha and major cultivated regions were Idukki and Wayanad districts. The leaf spot of cabbage is caused by Alternaria brassicicola is a widespread disease affecting the yield of cabbage. This disease can be managed by using fungicides or bioagents but the efficacy of these measures depend on host pathogen interaction, which is influenced by environmental factors.

The present study was conducted to detect the presence of phytochemicals in plant extracts pertaining to Meghalaya and their efficacy against Alternaria brassicicola, a causal agent of black leaf spot of cauliflower. Phytochemical screening of plant extracts studied showed that winged prickly ash and ginger had almost all the phytochemicals tested but least phytochemicals was observed in black pepper. Phytochemicals such as alkaloids and flavonoids were presence in almost all plant extracts.

Alternaria blight caused by Alternaria brassicae (Berk) Sacc. and A. brassicicola (Schw) Wiltshire is one of the most common and destructive disease of rapeseedmustard. The experiments were conducted under field condition to develop effective management strategies for this disease through evaluation of genotypes for resistance and application of fungicide, bio-agents and botanical.

Inhibitory potential of silver nanoparticle (AgNP) at concentrations of 10, 20, 50 and 100 ppm was assessed on two foliar phytopathogens viz. Bipolaris sorokiniana and Alternaria brassicicola. Antifungal activity of AgNP was found to be significant in reducing germinating spores as well as mycelial growth of both pathogens in an experiment under controlled condition. AgNP at a concentration of 20 ppm was found effective to inhibit spore germination in B. sorokiniana as well as A. brassicicola. AgNP at 100 ppm resulted in restricting maximum mycelial growth for both pathogens.

India is one of the largest rapeseed–mustard growing countries in the world occupying the third position in area and in production after China and Canada with 12% of world’s total production. Rapeseed-mustard is the second most important oilseed crop in the country after groundnut and accounts for nearly 30.7% of the total oilseed production in the country. At global level rapeseed–mustard is cultivated on 36.15 m ha with production of 71.09 MT. Alternaria blight caused by Alternaria brassicae and Alternaria brassicicola has become one of the important diseases of this crop in the country.

Mustard is one of the important oilseed crop in the country. It contributes 26.5 % to the total domestic edible oil production. Alternaria blight is one of the major factor in the reduction of yield and quality which ranges from 15-71 % depending upon the severity of the disease. The present study was undertaken to evaluate diversity among different isolates of Alternaria brassicicola collected from various regions of Bihar and adjoining parts.

Considerable losses caused by Alternaria blight on the oilseed crop rapeseed-mustard annually caused by Alternaria brassicae and Alternaria brassicicola. The study was conducted with the aim to assess tolerant sources of mustard lines against dark spot and to ascertain the optimum time of screening against the disease in Bihar region. We screened 50 lines of mustard against Alternaria blight under natural incidence in the year 2015-16 and 2016-17 using Area Under Disease Progress Curve (AUDPC).

Aims of present study were to isolate and characterize chitinase producing fungi from soil samples of apple orchards of Shimla and Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. The soil samples were collected aseptically and subjected to serial dilution to isolate the fungal strains. Total nine morphologically different fungi were isolated and screened for their chitinolytic activity in colloidal chitin incorporated media through zone assay. The isolates were screened based on the size of the zone formed. Best chitinase producers were subjected 18S ribosomal RNA sequencing.

Blackleg (Leptosphaeria maculansand Leptosphaeria biglobosa) and black spot (Alternaria brassicicola) fungi are devastating plant pathogens known to detoxify the plant defence metabolite, brassinin. The significant roles of brassinin as a crucifer phytoalexin and as a biosynthetic precursor of sev-eral other plant defences make it important in plant fitness.
