Brinjal is one of the important vegetable crops growing in India. Fruit rot brinjal caused by Alternaria alternata, Colletotrichum melongenae and Phomopsis vexans is one of the important diseases of brinjal. Hence, in this investigation, critical growth studies were done to understand the pathogen behaviour. The nutritional studies were taken up to know the best medium required for the growth and sporulation of the all three pathogens.

A survey was conducted in some districts of Upper Brahmaputra Valley Zone of Assam for most prevailing diseases in brinjal during the year 2015-16. Apart from the fruit rot disease of brinjal (Solanum melongena L.) caused by Phomopsis, Phytophthora, Alternaria etc., a new pathogen, Phoma exigua was observed. Initial symptom developed on the fruits as minute, slightly sunken spots, which later produced minute black bodies (pycnidia) scattered and immersed in the infected host tissues.

Alternaria leaf spot caused by Alternaria alternata is one of the important foliar diseases of brinjal (Solanum melongena L.) The present study on severity of Alternaria leaf spot of brinjal in Kashmir valley was conducted during kharif 2016. An extensive survey was conducted in three districts of Kashmir valley viz., Anantnag, Baramulla, and Budgam revealed that disease was prevalent in all the three districts with mean disease incidence and intensity of 30.76 and 9.77 per cent, respectively. The maximum disease incidence of 38.68 and intensity of 14.

Brinjal growers of Assam completely depend on the chemocentric cultivation practices to combat the crop diseases, which increases the cost of cultivation and affect the consumers with pesticides residues. Moreover, excessive use of a wide range of fungicides has resulted harmful effect to the environment and increased the resistant pathogen populations. Development of an alternative eco-friendly disease management module for sustainable crop production is the need of the hour.

The pyrimidine derivative (4,6-dimethyl-N-phenyldiethyl pyrimidine, DPDP) was tested as a foliar spray fungicide at 50 mg l1 for protection of eggplant (Solanum melongena) from spot disease caused by Alternaria alternata. Varied concentrations of DPDP (10–50 mg l1 ) differentially inhibited mycelial growth, conidial count and conidial germination of A. alternata growth in vitro; the magnitude of inhibition increased with increasing concentration.
