In sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), one paramount breeding objective is to increase grain quality. The nutritional quality and end use value of sorghum grains are primarily influenced by the proportions of tannins, starch and proteins, but the genetic basis of these grain quality traits remains largely unknown.

The plant Acacia catechu (L.f) Willd hydroethanolic leaf extract was subjected to qualitative and quantitative phytochemical screening, HPTLC and GCMS analysis. The phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of carbohydrates, proteins, flavonoids, total phenolics, glycosides, total free amino acids, tannins, alkaloids and thiols. The secondary metabolites like flavonoids, tannins and total phenolics were quantified as 82μg/ml, 67.5μg/ml and 42.5μg/ml.

An investigation was carried out for evaluating the table grape genotypes against incidence of mites in Sector No. 70, UHS, Bagalkot, Karnataka after fore pruning (October) 2016 at different phenological stages. Results revealed that among 12 grape genotypes studied, significantly lowest mites population was recorded in Red Globe (T12) (8.63 mites/sq. inch of leaf) after 115 DAP. The grape berry is considered a sink for primary key metabolites and relies on the use of available carbohydrates produced by photosynthesis to support its growth and development. Sorghum is an essential crop in the semi-arid tropics being attacked by nearly 150 species of insects, out of which Chilo partellus is the more devastating pest. Based on the foliar damage the resistance and susceptible genotypes of sorghum can be screened. For further understanding of the host plant resistance relationship between sorghum and stem borer the orientation behaviour and larval establishment behaviour can be studied. The host plant resistance in sorghum to C. partellus can be either morphological or biochemical.
