Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are increasingly common and threaten human health. Recently, antibiotic resistance in food associated bacteria become an emerging threat to this state. This study aimed to investigate the antibiotic resistance of seven Lactobacillus strains having potential application as probiotics, to common 14 antibiotics.

Aging, noise, infection, and ototoxic drugs are the major causes of human acquired sensorineural hearing loss, but treatment options are limited. CRISPR/ Cas9 technology has tremendous potential to become a new therapeutic modality for acquired non-inherited sensorineural hearing loss.

The effects of an aminoglycoside antibiotic, streptomycin, on survival rate, development time, and adult longevity of Drosophila melanogaster (Diptera: Drosophilidae) were examined by adding on the artificial diet at different concentrations in laboratory condition. The effect of streptomycin on malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein carbonyl (PCO) contents, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) activities in all developmental stages of D. melanogaster was also investigated.

The objectives of this study were to identify the prevalence of aminoglycosides resistance among isolates of Acinetobacter baumannii complex causing BSIs, to assess the possible synergistic effect of aminoglycosides drugs combinations with imipenem and ciprofloxacin against resistant Acinetobacter baumannii complex strains and detection of AMEs and 16S rRNA methylase genes associated with aminoglycosides resistance in these isolates.

Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains represent a worldwide threat because of their virulence and broad distribution in the hospital settings and community. MRSA strains are often resistant to beta lactam antibiotics and also to flouroquinolones, chloramphenicol, clindamycin, tetracycline and aminoglycosides. In addition, resistance is shown to recently develop anti-staphylococcus agents including the Oxazolidione and Streptogramin.

Enterococci mainly being commensals in human faeces are now considered as an important cause of nosocomial infections. Of the infections, the commonly observed are urinary tract infections, abdominal infections followed by bacteremia, endocarditis and meningitis rarely. Speciation of Enterococcus aids in effective management of the infections caused by them. The initial treatment for enterococcal infections has become challenging due to development of resistance. The resistance has been observed mainly against aminoglycosides due to the presence of bi-functional gene.

Enterococci, initially considered as normal commensal of intestinal tract have recently emerged as a medically important pathogen. Incidence of enterococccal infection is significantly high in patients suffering from urinary tract infection, blood stream infection and surgical sites infection. Nosocomial enterococcal infection is also common in organ transplants recipients cancer patients and debilitated patients receiving broad spectrum antibiotics. One of the important causes of development of multi drug resistant Enterococci is antibiotic selective pressure.

The emergence of Enterococcus species in causing nosocomial infections poses a therapeutic challenge to clinicians. Enterococci are intrinsically resistance to multiple antibiotics. Acquired resistance to commonly used antibiotics like Ampicillin, Vancomycin and Aminoglycosides have made the situation worse and difficult to treat serious enterococcal infections. The present study aimed to isolate Enterococcus from various clinical samples and their antimicrobial susceptibility pattern in a tertiary care hospital.

Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of 29 Lactobacillus isolates was determined by E-test strip method according to CLSI and EFSA, 2012 standards. All isolates displayed resistance towards aminoglycosides while 63% of isolates were found resistant to amikacin (MIC 16-256 µg/ml). Strains S8a and S8b (L. rhamnosus and L. acidophilus) were resistant to tetracycline (MIC 256 µg/ml).

Hospital acquired infections are one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality in hospitalized patients, leading to an enormous increase in the cost of hospital care and to the emergence of new health hazards for the community. The study aimed to determine the bacteriological profile of hospital acquired infections along with prevalence of multidrug resistance and extended spectrum beta lactamase (ESBL) enzymes amongst the isolates. A total of 180 isolates of various organisms were isolated from different clinical samples during a period of one year from January 2014 to December 2014.

Hearing loss in children born before 32 weeks of gestation is more prevalent than in full term infants. Aminoglycoside antibiotics are routinely used to treat bacterial infections in babies on neonatal intensive care units. However, this type of medication can have harmful effects on the auditory system.

Infection of sterile body fluid can lead to severe morbidity and mortality. Periodic surveillance and monitoring programmers are helpful for framing the antibiotic policy. The present study was undertaken to evaluate aerobic bacteriological profile along with their antibiogram from various sterile fluids over a period of five years. A total of 1708 body fluid samples were processed according to Standard guidelines and analysed in order to assess the changing trends in bacteriological profile and antibiogram.

Enterococci gained great significance as a nosocomial pathogen in the recent past mainly due to its intrinsic to many antimicrobials including low level aminoglycoside resistance. Detection of the acquired high level aminoglycoside resistance (HLAR) had become essential as clinical failures reported especially with endocarditis. Total of 60 enterococcal isolates were tested (30 from clinical cases as cases and 30 from stool samples as controls) for high level aminoglycoside resistance for gentamicin and streptomycin by three methods -agar dilution, E-test and disc diffusion method.

This is explores many of the aspects of the growing problem posed by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. What is unique about this book is that it is a blend of the purely scientific and the practical, an approach that is essential because antibiotic resistance is a social and economic problem as well as a scientific problem.

Food safety is of great importance to consumers. To ensure the safety of the food supply and to facilitate international trade, government agencies and international bodies establish standards, guidelines, and regulations that food producers and trade partners need to meet, respect, and follow. A primary goal of national and international regulatory frameworks for the use of veterinary drugs, including antimicrobials, in food-producing animals is to ensure that authorized products are used in a manner that will not lead to non-compliance residues.
