This review provides new insight into the RFI and its relationship with productive traits in different species of poultry. In poultry breeding programs, use of the RFI in selection procedures as a negative trait must be adopted to produce an efficient breed with low feed costs and high productivity. From the point of view of an environmental perspective, selecting birds with lower RFI reduces emissions of ammonia and greenhouse gases from poultry houses.

The energy requirement has increased exponentially over the past decades due to industrialization and the changes of subsequent lifestyle. Almost 90% of the present energy source is based on the combustion of fossil fuels. Diesel engines are considered the most ideal power generators in transportation and industrial sectors owing to their fuel economy and efficiency.
