An experiment in evaluating the quality of translations

To lay the foundations for a systematic procedure that could be applied to any scientific translation, this experiment evaluates the error variances attributable to various sources inherent in a design in which discrete, randomly ordered sentences from translations are rated for intelligibility and for fidelity to the original.

This paper discusses the results of an experiment designed to test the quality of translations, in which human subjects were presented with IBM-produced machine translations of several passages taken from the Russian electrical engineering journal Elektrosviaz, and with human translations of some other passages taken from Telecommunications, the English translation of Elektrosviaz.
