  • Bacillus cereus is a notorious foodborne pathogen, which can grow under anoxic conditions. Anoxic growth is supported by endogenous redox metabolism, for which the thiol redox proteome serves as an interface. Here, we studied the cysteine (Cys) proteome dynamics of B. cereus ATCC 14579 cells grown under fermentative anoxic conditions. We used a quantitative thiol trapping method combined with proteomics profiling.

  • Rice cultivation is taken in flooded soil condition. This creates an anaerobic environment and harbours different group of anaerobes. The continued submergence of soil provides a reducing environment and effects a build-up of anaerobic ecosystem in which two unique processes namely methane emission and reductive transformation of nitrogen occur. But the role played by specific group of anaerobes with respect to nitrogen transformation is still obscure. A study was undertaken to assess the different groups of anaerobes in nitrogen transformation in flooded rice soils.

  • It is generally accepted that the energy resources of cancer cells rely on anaerobic metabolism or the glycolytic system, even if they have sufficient oxygen. This is known as the Warburg effect. The cells skillfully survive under hypoglycemic conditions when their circumstances change, which probably at least partly involves microRNA (miRNA)-mediated regulation.

  • An investigation has been carried out to develop a biological treatment technology for the removal of odourous compounds from domestic sewage water. Under aerobic condition, free molecular oxygen is used by microbes as electron acceptor and produce water. Under anaerobic condition, if neither oxygen nor nitrate (NO3 - ) is present, microbes tend to use sulphate (SO4 2- ) as electron acceptor and generate volatile H2S.

  • A potted experiment was carried out in the net house of the Plant Breeding Unit, TRRI, Aduthurai in 2020 to screen and evaluate the performance of diverse rice genotypes for anaerobic germination ability with a view to select the suitable genotypes for multiple stress tolerance (drought and anaerobic germination) that will fit into the existing niche in the DSR. The aim of this experiment is to identify short duration genotypes with early vigour and potential to germinate under anaerobic condition.

  • One of the easiest and efficient way of water conservation to solve drinking water scarcity is rooftop water harvesting. However, the technology has some limitations with regard to its purification system. The commonly used sand and gravel filter is very prone to clogging and its cleaning is not an easy job. At the same time, the alternative upward flow mesh filter needs further improvement in cleaning efficiency and some hassle free drain cum back washing mechanism. In upward flow mesh filter system, which creates anaerobic condition will give foul smell.

  • This work was performed to study the effect of C/N ratio on biogas volume production. The raw material used was cow dung while glucose and ammonium sulfate was used to modify the C/N ratio. An isolated six-liter container was used to run the anaerobic process where the temperature was kept in a range of mesophilic condition.

  • A study of the degradation of endosulfan (6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 10-hexachloro – 1, 5, 5a, 6, 9, 9a – hexahydro – 6, 9- methano – 2, 4, 3 – benzodioxanthiepin 3 – oxide) in Malaysian sandy loam and clay soils was carried out using a radioisotopic technique under laboratory conditions. It was demonstrated that endosulfan possessed long half-lives of 433, 495 and 462 days in aerobic sandy loam, aerobic clay and anaerobic clay soils respectively. Endosulfan degrades faster in non-sterile than in sterile soils. This study indicates that microorganisms are involved in the degradation of endosulfan.

  • Ethanol production is also known as ethanolic fermentation in which sugars of biomaterials are converted into the ethanol and carbon hydroxide that may called as coproduct of fermentation. In general fermentation is a bio-chemical process where decomposition of biomaterials takes place. During bio-chemical reduction the sugar compounds like sucrose, fructose, glucose and lactose are converted into the ethyl ethanol and CO2 as by product of the fermentation process.

  • The main objective of this research is to convert the waste paddy straw collected from farm fields after harvesting into useful biogas generation. For this, a newly designed paddy straw plant is developed and fabricated to utilize quintals of paddy straw to produce biogas for domestic purposes and an alternative to the LPG cylinder for Indian families. Due to favorable climatic conditions of the northern region of India; the plant was developed as a batch system to fulfill the cooking needs.
