  • Nine diverse genotypes of bitter gourd (Momordica charantia L.) were crossed during summer season of 2015 in diallel design (excluding reciprocals).The resultant 36 hybrids along with the parents were evaluated in randomized block design with three replications during Kharif 2015 at Horticulture farm, S.K.N. College of Agriculture, Jobner. Each parents/F1 were sown in furrow maintaining 2.25m x 0.75m spacing. The analysis of variance for experimental design revealed the existence of adequate genetic variability in experimental material for all traits under study.

  • Gene action for various quantitative and qualitative traits was explored in a half diallel involving seven elite inbred lines. Variance/Co-variance graphs revealed that the yield potential traits like (days to 50% pollen shed, days to 75% brown husk, plant height ear placement height, ear length, kernel rows per ear, kernel per row, test weight and grain yield,) displayed that the intercept of the regression line was negative showing over dominance type of gene action.

  • The present investigation entitled “Diallel Analysis in Cowpea (Vignaunguiculata (L.) Walp.)” was conducted during kharif, 2013. The present study involves seven parents which were crossed in half diallel fashion in order to determine heterosis and combining ability. Seven parents viz., GC-3, CPD-91, HC-08-02, PGCP-1, GC-06-01, JOB-129 and CP-105, their resultant 21 crosses along with two standard checks viz., VCM-8 and Phule Pandhari were grown during Kharif 2013 in a Randomized Block Design with two replications.

  • Combining ability effects of yield and its components in okra were studied through full diallel analysis of 66 F1 hybrids derived by crossing 12 nearly homozygous germplasm lines viz., IC- 45831, IC- 282272, IC- 43733, IC- 43750, IC- 45802, Sel – 4, Pusa Mukhmali, Parbhani Kranti, VRO- 3, Sel – 10, Pusa A-4 and SB – 8 and by using Arka Anamika as check. Out of these 12 genotypes, IC-45802, Parbhani Kranti and VRO-3 exhibited highest significant GCA effect for fruit yield per plant (g) and subsequent fruit yield per hectare (q).

  • The present study was carried out for development of hybrids in ridge gourd for earliness and yield traits. Twenty eight crosses were developed through half diallel fashion. Evaluated the crosses and along with their parents in Randomized block design (RBD). Significant differences found in the analysis of variance for early and yield related traits which indicates enormous genetic variability present in the ridge gourd.

  • A study was conducted to assess the extent of heterosis and combining ability of muskmelon in a half diallel mating design. Forty five F1 hybrids and ten inbred lines were evaluated for fourteen different characters during 2014-15 at Department of Vegetable Science, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana.   • The objective of this study was to breed muskmelon hybrids possessing higher TSS, flesh, and rind thickness, early and total yields; lower seed cavity; and resistance to fruit fly. L.) revealed highly significant mean squares due to genotypes for all characters except days to first picking and fruit girth.   • The experiment comprised of twenty one maize hybrids generated from a 7 X 7 diallel cross, along with their parents and two standard check hybrids (Gujarat Maize 3 and HQPM 1). The analysis of variance revealed that all the characters studied exhibited highly significant genotypic differences.   • The combining ability for yield and spot blotch disease resistance was studied in 21 cross combinations generated by crossing the selected spot blotch resistant and susceptible parents in 7 x 7 half half diallel design. Analysis of variance for combining ability indicated that SCA variance was higher than GCA variance for all the traits under study. The GCA component was significant for all the traits studied except for the trait thousand grain weight. The SCA component was significant for all the traits except for number of productive tillers per plant and thousand grain weight.
