Anterior cervical discectomy without fusion

When surgically treating cervical degenerative disc disease, the most commonly performed procedure is anterior cervical discectomy. This procedure is performed with, or without fusion promoting methods.

Surgical intervention is increasingly performed as the primary treatment of unstable Hangman’s fracture. Some authors have advocated using anterior C2/3 discectomy with interbody fusion and plating to treat unstable Hangman’s fracture combined with intervertebral disc injury; however, there are few reports on unstable Hangman’s fracture treated by anterior interbody fusion with the cervical cage (PEEK material) solely.

In the Netherlands most patients are currently seen in an outpatient clinic after an anterior cervical discectomy, which is an effective neurosurgical procedure with relatively low rate of severe complications. In this back sight, the need for patients returning to the post-operative outpatient clinic could be questioned.
