The objective of this study is to report typical clinical and laboratory characteristics of three cases of keratitis caused by Pythium insidiosum in China. It is significant for ophthalmologists and microbiologist to be alert to this eye-threatening infection, especially in patients who are resistant to antifungal treatments and with water-related exposure.

Quaternary ammonium salts are a group of compounds with diverse biological properties, the most important of which are their antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal activities. The quaternization reactions of 5'-O-tosyl derivatives of uridine and thymidine with triethylamine, trimethylamine, 4-(N ,N -dimethylamino)pyridine, 2-methylpyridine, and pyridine are described in this article.

The interest in study of waste management is being increased worldwide presently as the pollution by various means are made day by day. The waste utilization plays a vital role to overcome these pollutions and make possible to utilize the waste. Bananas plant has no use after harvesting the fruit, but it is used in following context significantly: viz. producing bioethanol, single cell protein, cellulase, citric acid, lactic acid, amylase, cosmetics, fibre, bio-film, paper, bio-plastic bio-electricity in the agro-industry, pharmaceuticals, bio-medical and bio-engineering aspect etc.

Human fungal infections are on the rise. Fungi causing skin infections are common but invasive fungi which are less known appear pathogenic and deadly. Environment, immunity and individual risk factors contribute for its susceptibility. Some of them can be fatal, if not diagnosed early and treated. Advances in molecular techniques help in early diagnosis. New modality of treatment such as antifungal peptides, fungal vaccines are in the pipeline. Improper and “Over the counter” medication must be avoided for the complete cure.

To study the various fungi causing otomycosis with its isolation and identification of species from the clinical laboratory of Vijayanagara Institute of Medical Sciences, Ballari, ear swab samples are collected from the department of ENT which is suspected for fungal cause of otomycosis. KOH mount was done for the presence of fungal elements and also Grams staining of the sample is done to look for uniformly stained Gram positive fungal elements. Another ear swab from the same ear is directly streaked on the SDA slant for fungal culture.

Two novel pore-forming peptides have been isolated from the venom of the South-African scorpion Opistophtalmus carinatus. These peptides, designated opistoporin 1 and 2, differ by only one amino acid and belong to a group of a-helical,cationic peptides. For the first time,a comparison of the primary structures ofa-helical pore-forming peptides from scorpion venom was undertaken.

Viscotoxins are cationic proteins, isolated from different mistletoe species, that belong to the group of thionins, a group of basic cysteine-rich peptides of5 kDa. They have been shown to be cytotoxic to different types of cell, including animal, bacterial and fungal. The aim of this study was to obtain information on the cell targets and the mechanism of action of vis-cotoxin isoform A3 (VtA3).

The term ‘antimicrobial peptides’ refers to a large number of peptides first characterized on the basis of their antibiotic and antifungal activities. In addition to their role as endogenous antibiotics, antimicrobial peptides, also called host defense peptides, participate in multiple aspects of immunity (inflammation, wound repair, and regulation of the adaptive immune sys-tem) as well as in maintaining homeostasis.

Whereas significant knowledge is accumulating on the antibacterial and antifungal properties of host defense peptides (HDPs) and their synthetic mimics, much less is known of their activities against parasites. A variety ofin vitro andin vivo antiparasitic assays suggest that these notorious anti-microbial compounds could represent a powerful tool for the development of novel drugs to fight parasites in the vertebrate host or to complement current therapeutic strategies

A cDNA library from tobacco inoculated withRhizoctonia solaniwas con-structed, and several cDNA fragments were identified by differential hybridization screening. One cDNA clone that was dramatically repressed, NtKTI1, was confirmed as a member of the Kunitz plant proteinase inhibi-tor family. RT-PCR analysis revealed that NtKTI1was constitutively expressed throughout the whole plant and preferentially expressed in the roots and stems.
