Photodynamic therapy (PDT) applications enable light-controlled activation of drug candidates instead of their constitutive activities to prevent undesired side effects associated with their constant activities. A specific wavelength of light is utilized to enable electron mobility in the chemical structure, which results in differential activities that may alter cell viability and cellular functions. Canonical photodynamic therapy applications mostly focus on cytotoxicity-based antimicrobial and anticancer properties of the PDT agents.

Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used for the treatment of pain and inflammation. Some undesirable effects are linked with NSAIDs such as the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) toxicity and cardiovascular disturbances. At present the preparation of a hybrid molecular technique is being used to produce new analgesic and antiinflammatory molecules. Attachment of NSAIDs with nitric oxide and hydrogen sulfide releasing molecules produced some gastroprotective agents with improved analgesic and antiinflammatory activities.

protect endangered tissueBenzoxazoles are DNA base bioisosteres and studies suggest that their derivatives have antiproliferative activities. Based on their antiproliferative activities they have been mostly studied as new generation anticancer drugs. In our study we exploited their antiproliferative effect, aiming to delineate bisbenzoxazole derivatives’ (RHE 231 and RHE 238) potential antiinflammatory effect on mouse macrophages that are activated in vitro through danger signal LPS stimulation. The in vitro total antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capacity of the methanol extract of Ixora duffii leaf (―Trang to‖ in Vietnamese) was investigated using the phosphomolypdenum method and the bovine serum albumin denaturation test, respectively. The results showed that the methanol extract of I. duffii leaf possessed relatively high antioxidant activity (OD0,5 = 15.551 ± 0.344 μg/mL) compared to that of the standard, trolox (OD0,5=2.315 ± 0.083 μg/mL). The antiinflammatory effect using bovine serum albumin denaturation test showed that the activity of the methanol extract of I.

The increasing awareness of the importance of chirality in the context of biological activity has stimulated a growing demand for efficient methods for industrial synthesis of pure enantiomers including chiral antiinflammatory drugs such as naproxen (Xin et al., 2001) and ibuprofen (Lee et al., 1995; Ducret et al., 1998; Xie et al., 1998; Arroyo et al., 1999; Chen and Tsai, 2000); antihypertensive agents such as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors (e.g., captopril, enalapril, ceranopril, zofenapril, and lisinopril); and the calcium channel- blocking drugs such as diltiazem.

Figure 53-1 Atopic dermatitis. Hyperpigmentation, lichenification, and scaling in the antecubital fossae are seen in this patient with atopic dermatitis. (Courtesy of Robert Swerlick, MD; with permission.) Atopic Dermatitis: Treatment Therapy of AD should include avoidance of cutaneous irritants, adequate moisturizing through the application of emollients, judicious use of topical antiinflammatory agents, and prompt treatment of secondary infection. Patients should be instructed to bathe no more often than daily using warm or cool water, and to use only mild bath soap.
