Green tea consumption has been shown to exhibit cancer-preventive activities in preclinical studies. Polyphenon E (Poly E) is a green tea standardized extract. This study was undertaken to examine the antiproliferative effect and pro-oxidant activity of Poly E on PC3 prostate cancer cells.

PKR is an interferon-induced serine-threonine protein kinase that plays an important role in the mediation of the antiviral and antiproliferative actions of interferons. PKR is present at low basal levels in cells and its expression is induced at the transcriptional level by interferons. PKR’s kin-ase activity stays latent until it binds to its activator. In the case of virally infected cells, double-stranded (ds) RNA serves as PKR’s activator.

Sanguinarine has been shown to inhibit proliferation of several types of human cancer cell including multidrug-resistant cells, whereas it has min-imal cytotoxicity against normal cells such as neutrophils and keratino-cytes. By analyzing the antiproliferative activity of sanguinarine in relation to its effects on mitosis and microtubule assembly, we found that it inhibits cancer cell proliferation by a novel mechanism.

Physalis philadelphicaLam, commonly known as a tomatillo, is a staple of the Mesoamerican cuisine. In our laboratory, an ethyl acetate-soluble extract and four withanolides [ixocarpalactone A (IxoA), ixocarpalac-tone B, philadelphicalactone B, and withaphysacarpin] were isolated. Stud-ies conducted on Hepa-1c1c7 hepatoma cells revealed that withanolides were potent inducers of quinone reductase, suggesting possible cancer chemo-protective activity.
