Antihyperglycemic activity

We report two similar cases of patients diagnosed with hemiballismus–hemichorea syndrome secondary to uncontrolled hyperglycemia. Both patients were treated at an inpatient rehabilitation center and made a significant recovery in both function and activities of daily living.

Coriander is an annual seed spice crop, which belongs to family Apiaceae. It is native of Mediterranean region. The aromatic characters of plants are due to presence of linalool compound in essential oil of seeds. Medicinal plants are the base of traditional system of medicine and herbal industry for the development of new drug. The A. marmelos is also known as bael, wooden apple, belo and bilwa. The important phytochemicals isolated from various parts of the plant are alkaloids, cardiac glycoside, saponin, steroids, coumarines terpenoids, phenylpropenoids, tannins, polysaccharides and flavonoids.

The current study evaluated the antihyperglycemic and hypolipidaemic effects of methanolic extract of Viscum schimperi Engl. whole parts in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. The antihyperglycemic activity was evaluated by measuring the fasting blood glucose level (BGL) and by applying the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) in diabetic rats. In addition, the effect of the extract on blood plasma insulin was measured as well as its effect on tissue glycogen contents in muscle and liver.

Some extracts of medicinal plants have been proven to be beneficial in treating a number of diseases for centuries such as treating diabetes, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, etc. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of extracts from several herbal plants, such as Gymnema sylvestre, Stevia rebaudiana, Cinnamomum cassia, Zea may, Ocimum basilicumon on blood glucose level in streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic mice and to offer scientific proofs for the identified antihyperglycemic effect by investigating on mechanisms of the most effective extract.
