Antimicrobial resistance of neisseria gonorrhoeae
-
Antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) Neisseria gonorrhoeae is an urgent threat to public health, as strains resistant to at least one of the two last-line antibiotics used in empiric therapy of gonorrhoea, ceftriaxone and azithromycin, have spread internationally.

Antimicrobial resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a global health concern. Strains from two internationally circulating sequence types, ST-7363 and ST-1901, have acquired resistance to third-generation cephalosporins, mainly due to mosaic penA alleles.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae causes gonorrhoea, the second most commonly notified sexually transmitted infection in Australia. One of the highest notification rates of gonorrhoea is found in the remote regions of Western Australia (WA). Unlike isolates from the major Australian population centres, the remote community isolates have low rates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Multidrug-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains are prevalent, threatening gonorrhoea treatment globally, and understanding of emergence, evolution, and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in gonococci remains limited.

Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae and is a major public health problem. Resistance has rapidly emerged to recommended antimicrobial agents for the management of gonorrhoea. This study was undertaken to determine the resistance of Neisseria gonorrhoeae among the clinically suspected cases of gonorrhoea in an STD Referral Centre. Urethral discharge and endocervical swabs were collected from clinically suspected cases of gonorrhoea. Gram’s stain was performed to observe intracellular gram-negative diplococci.

To describe the antimicrobial resistant levels of isolated N. gonorrhoeae. Methods: This was a cross sectional study. N. gonorrhoeae was isolated from pus or discharge of 1582 patients with urethral and/or vaginal discharge syndromes. Isolates were determined by using Gram staining, culture, and identification test, followed by antimicrobial susceptibility method. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was performed to differentiate the between resistant and susceptible isolates.
