Antioxidant administration

As one of the most common surgeries performed in veterinary medicine, ovariohysterectomy (OHE) can induce oxidative stress in dogs. The antioxidant properties of melatonin have been confirmed in various studies. This study aimed to investigate the effects of melatonin administration on oxidative stress in dogs before and after OHE.

N-acetylcysteine amide (NACA) is a new antioxidant molecule with powerful radical scavenging properties. The aim of this study was to investigate neuroprotective effects of NACA against paraquat (PQ) toxicity in the midbrains of rats by using motor coordination tests and biochemical and histological analysis. Thirty adult Wistar albino rats were divided into three groups: Group 1: control (n = 10), Group 2: PQ (10 mg/kg) (n = 10), and Group 3: PQ (10 mg/kg) + NACA (100 mg/kg) (n = 10). NACA was administrated intraperitoneally 30 min before PQ injection.

The animals were divided into two groups comprising of ten animals in each group as: Group-I: Treatment group of Surti buffaloes treated with Inj. Vitamin E and Selenium (ECARE Se) on 60th, 45th, 30th and 15th day before expected date of parturition and after parturition on 15th, 30th day and Group-II: Control group given Inj. Normal Saline (IM) as placebo treatment.

The study was carried out on 20 Surti buffaloes during their transient period maintained at the Livestock Research Station, Navsari Agricultural University, Navsari, Gujarat. These animals were divided into two groups of ten each. Buffaloes of group-I were treated with Inj. Vitamin E and Selenium (E-CARE Se) on 60th, 45th, 30thand 15thday before expected date of parturition and after parturition on 15th, 30thday, while buffaloes of group-II were treated with Inj. Normal Saline as placebo treatment IM.

To study the impact of radish oil on the possible genotoxic and hepatotoxic effects of hexavalent chromium, male rats were divided into 4 groups. Group 1 served as control, group 2 received radish oil at the recommended human therapeutic dose (0.07 mL/kg) by gavage, group 3 received sodium dichromate dihydrate (SDD) 520 mg/L in drinking water, and group 4 received both SDD and radish oil as previously mentioned in groups 2 and 3. All treatments were continued for six months.

To evaluate the immune activation and reactive oxygen species scavenging activity of Cordyceps militaris polysaccharides (CMP) in vivo, 90 male BALB/c mice were randomly divided into six groups. The mice in the three experimental groups were given cyclophosphamide at 80 mg/kg/d via intraperitoneal injection and 17.5, 35, or 70 mg/kg body weight CMP via gavage. The lymphocyte proliferation, phagocytic index, and biochemical parameters were measured.

Optimal conditions for the extraction of black fungus polysaccharides were 350 W, 5, 35 min and 90 ◦C, for ultrasonic power, ratio of water to sample, extraction time and extraction temperature, respectively. Gas chromatography (GC) analysis showed that black fungus polysaccharides contained glucose, xylose, mannose and ribose. Their molar percentages were 6.8%, 34.2%, 50.7% and 8.9%, respectively. FT-IR and NMR analysis showed typical chemical structure of black fungus polysaccharides.

Paraplegia remains a potential complication of spinal cord ischemic reperfusion injury (IRI) in which oxidative stress induced cyclooxygenase activities may contribute to ischemic neuronal damage. Prolonged administration of vitamin E (α-TOL), as a potent biological antioxidant, may have a protective role in this oxidative inflammatory ischemic cascade to reduce the incidence of paraplegia. The present study was designed to evaluate the preventive value of α-TOL in IRI of spinal cord.
