Ebook "Oxidants in biology: A question of balance" focuses on how the same molecules can have favorable or noxious effects depending on location, level and timing. Each chapter focuses on one particular molecule or oxidant/antioxidant system and provides a state of the art review of the current understanding regarding both positive and negative actions of the system under review.

The most important types of abiotic stress that affect agricultural crops throughout the world are drought and salinity. These stresses will continue to worsen as the current climate crisis progresses. Plants have evolved a complex set of mechanisms in order to protect themselves from salt and drought. At the macrobiological level, these include alterations in growth rate, water balance, antioxidant defenses, and photosynthesis.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic, lethal disease of which the etiology is still not fully understood. Current treatment comprises two FDA-approved drugs that can slow down yet not stop or reverse the disease. As IPF pathology is associated with an altered redox balance, adding a redox modulating component to current therapy might exert beneficial effects.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) or oxidative stress has been reported with strongly involving to pathogenesis of many diseases in human. On the other hand, ROS play a critical regulation as secondary signal to maintain intracellular redox equilibrium. Basically, the antioxidant defense systems in the body counteract with overproduced ROS. However, when the redox balance is broken under severe oxidative stress conditions, it leads to tissue injuries and numerous disorders.

Tomato is one of the most extensively cultivated vegetables and is a rich source of nutrients such as vitamins, antioxidants and minerals for a balanced human diet. World over, early blight (EB) caused by Alternaria solani Sorauer is limiting tomato production and causes great losses. In total, 350 tomato genotypes from ICAR-National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBPGR), New Delhi were evaluated for early blight resistance under epiphytotic conditions at ICARIndian Institute of Vegetable Research (ICAR-IIVR), Varanasi.

Salinity is one of the most aggressive environmental stresses that hamper crop productivity worldwide. Increased salt concentration in soil reduces plants ability to take up water. It also reduces nutrients availability, uptake and transport, and there distribution resulting nutritional imbalance in plant. The Salt Overly Sensitive (SOS) signalling pathway is crucial to mediate cellular signalling and to maintain ion homeostasis under salinity stress. Many HKT family plasma membrane transporters play an essential role in salt tolerance mechanism by regulating Na+ and K+ transportation.

The experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of antioxidant [vitamin E (vit E)] and trace minerals [selenium (Se), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn)], high energy diet supplementation and its effect on allometric and physio-biochemical parameters in crossbred cows during transition period. For this, advanced pregnant crossbred cows (n = 20) of 2nd to 4th parity and lactation potential of >10 L/day at 28 days prepartum were divided into two groups viz. control (CON) and treatment (TRT) consisting of 10 animals each.

Bubaline pediculosis is a common and economically important ectoparasitic condition caused by sucking lice, Haematopinus tuberculatus. This condition in buffalo is characterized by anemia, mineral imbalance, and loss of production performance but its pathobiology is explored less. Aim of the present study was to explore the mineralooxidaive pathobiology of bubaline pediculosis and its amelioration using the two antioxidants as an adjunct therapeutic modality (N- acetyl cysteine and Vitamin E).

Endotoxin molecules in lipopolysaccharides are among most important molecules that initiate a cascade of events in sepsis/ endotoxemia. Lipopolysaccharide exposure may result in strong immune responses, disrupt the intracellular oxidant/antioxidant balance, and cause excessive reactive oxygen species generation.

Plant growth retardants’ applications have a practical use in fruit production, generally resulting in better vegetative growth and cropping level balance. Foliar applications of the gibberellin synthesis inhibitor prohexadione-Ca (ProCa), removal of young canes, and the combination of these treatments were evaluated in the Willamette raspberry (Rubus idaeus L).

The balance sheets of life and non-life insurance companies reflect the importance of technical (insurance underwriting) risks for insurance firms. Life insurance companies typically have the greater part of their liabilities taken up by technical provisions, in some jurisdictions more than 80 percent. This reflects the amount that the firm is setting aside to pay potential claims on the policies that it has written. Correspondingly, more than 90 percent of the assets of life insurance companies comprise the investment portfolio held to support these liabilities.

While the ECB’s policy response has, to a signifi cant extent, sheltered the non-fi nancial private sector from the sovereign debt crisis, and has avoided major disruptions in the fi nancing of the economy, the fi nancing environment of both banks and the non-fi nancial private sector of countries affected by the sovereign debt crisis remains challenging. This is particularly refl ected in persistent cross-country heterogeneity as well as in the strong link between sovereign market tensions, the funding and balance sheet conditions of banks, and the fi nancing of non-fi ...

There is growing evidence on the importance of studies focusing on mechanisms and strategies leading to cancer prevention. The plethora of approaches include regulation of oxidative stress using antioxidant therapies, carefully balanced diets and living habits, epidemiological evidence and molecular approaches on the role of key biological molecules such as antioxidant enzymes, vitamins, proteins and naturally occurring free radical scavengers as well as controversial results and clinical applications. These are some of the topics that this book highlights.
