Aphid infestation

The green peach aphid (GPA), Myzus persicae (Sülzer), is a widespread phloem-feeding insect that significantly influences the yield and visual quality of peach [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch]. Single dominant gene (Rm3)-based resistance provides effective management of this invasive pest, although little is known about the molecular responses of plants to GPA feeding.

A field experiment was conducted at Anand Agricultural University, Anand during Rabi season 2019-20 to assess the bio-efficacy of various biopesticides against aphids infesting coriander. Of the nine biopesticides evaluated against aphids infesting coriander, application of tobacco decoction was found the most effective followed by ginger rhizome extract and garlic bulb extract with coriander seed yield of 449, 437, and 420 kg/ha, respectively.

To know the initial occurrence and subsequent build-up of aphids population on chilli crop in relation to weather parameters, the field experiments were carried out from 2010-2012 at Horticultural Research station, Lam, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. Seasonal incidence of aphids was recorded from leaves and fruits at weekly intervals during the crop growth period. Based on the two years data, the results revealed that the infestation and severity of aphid population were highly influenced by weather parameters.

The study revealed that the observations taken for plant growth attributes and yield were comparatively higher in the plots with no pest infestation and were the lowest in the plants subjected to infestation by both root knot nematode and sucking insects. The interaction effect between different fertilizer regimes and different pest infestation was significant for all plant growth attributes and yield. The populations of these pests were lower in plants infested by both as compared to the plants subjected to sole infestation of these pests.

A field study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different sowing dates and application of selective pesticides against aphids (Lipaphis erysimi) population in mustard (Brassica juncea). Acephate 50 WG at 700 g. ha.-1 T3 (D3C3) was found to be most effective pesticide to control the mustard aphid population followed by Acetamiprid 20 % SP at 100 g. ha.-1 and Imidacloprid 200 SC at 300 ml. ha.-1 is moderately effective. Application of pesticide significantly controlled the aphid population which suggested that acephate 50 WG at 700 g. ha.-1 could restrain the aphid infestation in mustard.

The present study was carried out during Late kharif, 2016 at College of Horticulture, Anantharajupeta. The experiment was conducted with an objective to identify divergent genotypes to be used as donor parents in crop improvement. Thirty-two genotypes along with two checks were evaluated in a randomized block design with three replications and the data on 25 yield and yield attributing traits were recorded. The analysis of variance revealed significant differences among all genotypes indicating the presence of sufficient amount of variability for the characters studied.

Among seven bio-pesticides evaluated against A. craccivora on fenugreek, azadirachtin 0.0006%, neem oil 0.3% and garlic bulb extract 3% were found most effective in suppressing the aphid population. Maximum seed yield was registered in plots treated with azadirachtin followed by neem oil and garlic bulb extract. The maximum net realization was obtain in the treatment of azadirachtin and maximum ICBR was registered in neem oil 0.3%.

The study, done on the incidence of insect pest, revealed the presence of seven species of insect pests and three species of predator during the period of study from 16 September 2016 to 15 April 2017 at various stages of the brinjal crop after transplanting in district Rewa, Madhya Pradesh. The presence of whitefly, aphid, jassid and hadda beetle were recorded from the vegetative to maturity stage of the crop, while brinjal shoot and fruit borer as the most dominating species of the pest at vegetative as well as flowering and fruiting stage of the crop.

Infestation of the phytotoxic aphid Schizaphis graminum can rapidly induce leaf chlorosis in susceptible plants, but this effect is not observed with the nonphytotoxic aphid Sitobion avenae. However, few studies have attempted to identify the different defence responses induced in wheat by S. graminum and S. avenae feeding and the mechanisms underlying the activation of chlorosis by S. graminum feeding.

Young wheat plants are continuously exposed to herbivorous insect attack. To reduce insect damage and maintain their growth, plants evolved different defense mechanisms, including the biosynthesis of deterrent compounds named benzoxazinoids, and/or trichome formation that provides physical barriers.

Studies on seasonal incidence of aphid (Brevicoryne brassicae L.), infesting cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata L.) work was carried out at College of Agriculture, Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur (C.G.) during 2015-16 and 2016-17. The Brevicoryne brassicae L. damage was observed with a varying degree of infestation. The peak population of aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae L., was observed 172.5 / 20 plants and 140.45/ 20 plants in month of Febuary during both years (2015-16 and 2016-17), respectively.

The investigation was carried out to know the seasonal incidence of aphids and their level of infestation on yard long bean during Kharif 2018 and Rabi 2018-19 at AHRS, Bhavikere, UAHS, Shivamogga, Karnataka. The short duration yard long bean variety Arka Mangala was found infested with many number of sucking pests at various stages of crop growth. Among the different sucking pests recorded on yard long bean, aphids, Aphis craccivora Koch was the major pest causing yield loss under open field condition.

The study had been carried out in the semi-arid region of India at Agronomy farm, S.K.N. College of Agriculture, Jobner (Rajasthan) during Kharif 2018. The insect pests, aphid (Aphis craccivora Koch) and leafhopper (Empoasca kerri Pruthi) were observed as major sucking insect pests infesting on groundnut crop. The aphid and leafhopper population commenced in the last week of July and reached to its peak in the second week of September, when the maximum temperature, minimum temperature, relative humidity and rainfall were 30.0 oC, 21.0 oC, 78% and 1.6 mm, respectively.

Cowpea aphid (Aphis craccivora Koch) infestation accumulated phytohormone salicylic acid (SA) in leaves of soybean (Glycine max cv. Namdan) as these soybean plants were at stages R1 (beginning to bloom) and R3 (beginning pod development). Activity of major enzymes involving biosynthesis of SA, such as phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), benzoic acid 2-hydroxylase (BA2H), was also enhanced under aphid effect.

In this study, the inducible function of sodium nitroprusside (SNP, a nitric oxide donor) was evaluated based on the changes in some biochemical characteristics of mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek cv. DX208) involving resistance to cowpea aphid (Aphis craccivora Koch). SNP treatment was sufficient to increase content of chlorophylls, reduced aphid-infested damage, accumulated biosynthesis of antioxidants such as phenolic compounds and flavonoids in mungbean plants attacked by A. craccivora.
