Investigations on population dynamics of lucerne aphid were carried out under field condition during 2018-19 at Instructional Farm, Junagadh Agricultural University, Junagadh. The activity of aphid, Aphis craccivora was commenced from 2nd week of February and remained upto 3rd week of March having peak during 4th week of February in lucerne crop. Simultaneously, higher population of lady bird beetles was observed during 4th week of January to 3rd week of March and showed significantly highly positive correlation with aphid population.

The present investigation on abundance of major insect-pests infesting green gram and its associated natural enemies was carried at Instructional farm and Department of Entomology, Rajasthan College of Agriculture, MPUAT, Udaipur. Green gram variety SML-668 was sown on 18th July during kharif 2015 and 16th July during kharif 2016 with the seed rate of 15 kg/ ha; maintaining a row to row and plant to plant spacing of 30 cm x 10 cm, respectively. Blackgram (Vigna mungo) is a major pulse crop grown in Tamil Nadu and leaf crinkle virus is an important disease that infects the crops at various stages of its growth, which reduce the yield drastically. There are conflicting reports on the transmission of ULCV by insects that includes aphids, leafhopper, whitefly and beetle. Hence, a study was carried out to identify the putative vectors involved in the transmission of the disease. Found that the virus was effectively transmitted by aphid vector, Aphis craccivora in a non-persistent manner and whitefly (Bemisia tabaci).

Among seven bio-pesticides evaluated against A. craccivora on fenugreek, azadirachtin 0.0006%, neem oil 0.3% and garlic bulb extract 3% were found most effective in suppressing the aphid population. Maximum seed yield was registered in plots treated with azadirachtin followed by neem oil and garlic bulb extract. The maximum net realization was obtain in the treatment of azadirachtin and maximum ICBR was registered in neem oil 0.3%.

Laboratory experiments were conducted to study the persistence toxicity of Thiamethoxam 25 WDG (@20g, 25g, 30g and 35g a.i./ha), Imidacloprid 17.8% SL and Dimethoate 30%EC against adult apterous black legume aphids in cowpea as foliar spray. After 24 hr of exposure, Thiamethoxam persisted for 11, 15, 15 and 23 days when applied at dosages of 20g a.i., 25g a.i., 30g a.i. and 35g a.i./ ha respectively. Imidacloprid and Dimethoate persisted for 21 and 13 days when applied at 25 ml a.i. and 300 ml a.i./ha respectively.

The population of Aproaerema modicella initiated from 11th standard week when the population was maximum 5.82/plant. The minimum leaf miner population of 0.40/plant was recorded at 15th standard week when minimum temperature, relative humidity and sunshine hours were recorded highest. The lowest population of Aphis craccivora was recorded as 1.92 / plants in the 14th standard week while population of BHC was recorded as 0.35 larvae/plants and 13th standard week.

The experiment was conducted in the ‘A-B’ Block Farm of Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya situated at Kalyani, Nadia, West Bengal during both summer and kharif seasons of 2016 with an objective to study the seasonal variation in incidence of insect pests on two varieties of black gram viz. Pant U-31 and Pant U-19 as well as their relationship with abiotic factors in the lower Gangetic plains of West Bengal. The results revealed Aphis craccivora, Bemisia tabaci, Megalurothrips distalis, Maruca vitrata, Helicoverpa armigera, Spilarctia obliqua as the major pests of the crop.

The investigation was carried out to know the seasonal incidence of aphids and their level of infestation on yard long bean during Kharif 2018 and Rabi 2018-19 at AHRS, Bhavikere, UAHS, Shivamogga, Karnataka. The short duration yard long bean variety Arka Mangala was found infested with many number of sucking pests at various stages of crop growth. Among the different sucking pests recorded on yard long bean, aphids, Aphis craccivora Koch was the major pest causing yield loss under open field condition.

The study had been carried out in the semi-arid region of India at Agronomy farm, S.K.N. College of Agriculture, Jobner (Rajasthan) during Kharif 2018. The insect pests, aphid (Aphis craccivora Koch) and leafhopper (Empoasca kerri Pruthi) were observed as major sucking insect pests infesting on groundnut crop. The aphid and leafhopper population commenced in the last week of July and reached to its peak in the second week of September, when the maximum temperature, minimum temperature, relative humidity and rainfall were 30.0 oC, 21.0 oC, 78% and 1.6 mm, respectively.

Biology and feeding potential of Coccinella septempunctata was studied in the laboratory condition during 2013 in different months pertaining to different temperature regimes on Cowpea aphid, Aphis craccivora. During the cooler months of January and November, the life stages are prolonged and in the warmer months of March and May the life stages are shorter for the coccinellid. In January, when the mean temperature was 21.7ºC, the total developmental period from egg to adult stage, took 22.4±0.67 days whereas, in May, at 32.7ºC, the total developmental periods was 15.2±0.

Cowpea aphid (Aphis craccivora Koch) infestation accumulated phytohormone salicylic acid (SA) in leaves of soybean (Glycine max cv. Namdan) as these soybean plants were at stages R1 (beginning to bloom) and R3 (beginning pod development). Activity of major enzymes involving biosynthesis of SA, such as phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), benzoic acid 2-hydroxylase (BA2H), was also enhanced under aphid effect.

In this study, the inducible function of sodium nitroprusside (SNP, a nitric oxide donor) was evaluated based on the changes in some biochemical characteristics of mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek cv. DX208) involving resistance to cowpea aphid (Aphis craccivora Koch). SNP treatment was sufficient to increase content of chlorophylls, reduced aphid-infested damage, accumulated biosynthesis of antioxidants such as phenolic compounds and flavonoids in mungbean plants attacked by A. craccivora.

The differential accumulation of endogenous flavonoids was recorded in soybean (G. max (L.) Merr. cv. “Nam Dan”) under infestation of cowpea aphid (Aphis craccivora Koch) and/or treatment of the crude extract of cyanobacterium strain Nostoc calcicola HN9-1a. During A. craccivora infestation, flavonoids in the aphid-infested leaves were strongly induced to high contents, which were 1.84–2.21 - fold higher than that observed in control.
