Eucalyptus is one of the important plant species for paper pulp, fuel wood, and timber. In this study, a hybrid Eucalyptus, U16 line, was investigated for rapid in vitro propagation. The apical and adventitious shoots served as initial explants. These were free-disease symptoms that were collected for surface sterilization.

The cucumber is one of the most important vegetables worldwide and is used as a research model for study of phloem transport, sex determination and temperature-photoperiod physiology. The shoot apex is the most important plant tissue in which the cell fate and organ meristems have been determined. In this study, a series of whole-genome small RNA, degradome and transcriptome analyses were performed on cucumber shoot apical tissues treated with high vs. low temperature and long vs. short photoperiod.

Argonaute proteins (AGOs) are important players in the regulation of plant development by directing sRNAs to target mRNAs. In maize (Zea mays), AGO18b is a tassel-enriched and grass-specific AGO. Previous studies have shown that AGO18b is highly expressed in tassels during meiosis and negatively regulates determinacy of spikelet meristems.

In saffron (Crocus sativus), new corms develop at the base of every shoot developed from the maternal corm, a globular underground storage stem. Since the degree of bud sprouts influences the number and size of new corms, and strigolactones (SLs) suppress growth of pre-formed axillary bud, it was considered appropriate to investigate SL involvement in physiology and molecular biology in saffron.

In dicot Arabidopsis thaliana embryos two cotyledons develop largely autonomously from the shoot apical meristem (SAM). Recessive mutations in the Arabidopsis receptor-like kinase RPK1 lead to monocotyledonous seedlings, with low (10 %) penetrance due to complex functional redundancy.

The transition from vegetative to floral state in shoot apical meristems (SAM) is a key event in plant development and is of crucial importance for reproductive success. In perennial plants, this event is recurrent during tree life and subject to both within-tree and between-years heterogeneity.

The cultivar Robusta forms the mainstay of commercial banana cultivation in India. An efficient micropropagation system with high multiplication rate will boost banana cultivation and assist banana based industries in the country. The shoot apices of banana cv. Robusta were cultured on two basal media MS and B5 supplemented with different concentrations and combinations of plant growth regulators (PGR). The tissue culture responses were observed for shoot multiplication and effect of subculture on rate of shoot multiplication till 8th subculture.

Shoot apices of Physalis minima L. were cultured on fifteen full strength MS medium supplemented with various concentrations of cytokinins (BAP, KIN and TDZ). Tissue culture responses namely elongation of existing shoot and differentiation of multiple shoots were observed from the cultured explants. The establishment of cultured explants was not affected by the cytokinin concentration in the medium but overall shoot apices showed better establishment on medium supplemented with BAP than other cytokinins.

Head formation of broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) is greatly reduced under high temperature (22 °C and 27 °C). Broccoli inbred lines that are capable of producing heads at high temperatures in summer are varieties that are unique to Taiwan.

Double sterilized and pre-chilled shoot apices of Galmast cultivar obtained from mature trees (MTSTs) and in vitro raised seedlings (SBSTs) were inoculated on MS medium augmented with BA, Kn and TDZ with and without PG. Increase in BA concentration up to 5.0µM resulted in axillary shoot proliferation in about 40% shoots with a maximum of 14±0.72 shoots per explant. SBSTs (seedling born shoot tips) of same cultivar developed light yellow loose callus (LYLC) when they were cultured on MS(×½) medium fortified with BA(2.0-3.

Population dynamics studies of mustard aphid, L. erysimi on three Rapeseed-mustard varieties i.e. RH 0749, HNS 0901 and BSH 1 belonging to three Brassica spp. i.e. B. juncea, B. napus and B. rapa revealed that mustard aphid was available in the field from 3 rd Standard metrological week (SMW) (January) to 11th SMW (March). The peak aphid population (23.33-86.05 aphids/10 cm main apical shoot) was recorded during 9th SMW in all Brassica species (both timely and late sown) except in BSH 1 (timely sown) in which it attained peak (31.98 aphids/10 cm main apical shoot) in 6th SMW.

Studies were carried out for rapid micropropagation of two sugarcane genotypes Co-86032 and CoVC-18061. The explants were surface sterilized with 75% alcohol for 30 minutes using cotton. The cultures were initiated by inoculating shoot apical meristem on MS (Murashige and Skoog, 1962) medium containing 1.0 mg/l kinetin. The multiplication response of two sugarcane genotypes was studied under five levels of 6-Benzylaminopurine (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2 mg/l) and five levels of kinetin (0, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 mg/l) in completely randomized design with 5x5x2 factorial treatment combinations.

In vitro cultures of five moss species were established on hormone-free MS medium, or on MS medium supplemented with different concentrations of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and kinetin. In vitro culture of Eurhynchium praelongum (Hedw.) B., S. & G., has been initiated from the apical shoots of the gametophytes, and the cultures of Aloina aloides (K.F.Schultz) Kindb. Brachythecium velutinum (Hedw.) B., S. & G., Ceratodon purpureus (Hedw.) Brid. and Grimmia pulvinata (Hedw.) Sm. were initiated from the spores of immature sporophytes.

The sweet cherry tree shows an acrotonic growth habit and grows as a forest wood. Apical dominance is important in sweet cherries and commercial growth is not possible without human intervention. It is thus difficult to obtain a good tree shape and enough shoots and leaves for quality and a plentiful crop in cherry trees.

Chapter 35 - Plant structure, growth, and development. This chapter compare structures or cells; explain the phenomenon of apical dominance; distinguish between determinate and indeterminate growth; describe in detail the primary and secondary growth of the tissues of roots and shoots; describe the composition of wood and bark; distinguish between morphogenesis, differentiation, and growth; explain how a vegetative shoot tip changes into a floral meristem.

THE CYTOKININS WERE DISCOVERED in the search for factors that stimulate plant cells to divide (i.e., undergo cytokinesis). Since their discovery, cytokinins have been shown to have effects on many other physiological and developmental processes, including leaf senescence, nutrient mobilization, apical dominance, the formation and activity of shoot apical meristems, floral development, the breaking of bud dormancy, and seed germination.

Rest and activity in vegetative buds of trees P. Champagnat rue Laboratoire de Phytomorphog6n6se, Universite Blaise-Pascal, 4, Ferrand, France Ledru, F-63000, Clermont- Introduction Rest of buds, particularly on trees or shrubs, may have 3 different origins: 1) unfavorable environmental conditions (for instance low temperatures); in this case, the bud is called ’quiescent’; 2) correlative inhibitions exerted by other organs or parts of the plant, more or less distant from the considered bud.
