Apple production system

A wide range of graft transmissible pathogens (GTPs) of viral, viroid and phytoplasma etiology affect apple trees resulting in diseases with adverse effects in orchards around the globe. The significance of diseases caused by these GTPs on tree health, fruit shape and quality has resulted in the imposition of legislation based quarantine measures at both domestic and international front. Losses resulting from viruses in apple often remain unnoticed as the impact of these pathogens on productivity is evident over a period of time.

The present investigation was undertaken at experimental fields of Division of Fruit Science, SKUAST-Kashmir, during the year 2014. In order to solve the problems of low productivity, poor quality, less colour and irregular bearing habits in current apple plantations in Kashmir valley, two apple varieties namely Super Chief Sandidge and Fuji Zehn Aztec were imported from Italy on M9T337 rootstock and planted at a distance of 1.5× 3m on four wire trellis system (2222 trees/ha).

Guava (Psidium guajava L.) is considered as one of the exquisite, nutritionally valuable and high remunerative crop. It is an important component of human dietary system. Guava cheese is gaining importance in International market due to its high nutritive value and better self-life and taste changing the consumer taste from regular product like Jelly, paste and puree to modern product. In the present investigation guava cheese was prepared from different varieties viz. Lucknow-49, Allahabad safeda and Apple guava with addition of milk powder and without any additive.

Guava (Psidium guajava L.) is an important fruit crop of India and is considered to be poor men’s apple. Its production is low in India because of several important diseases by which it suffers. Among diseases, Anthracnose is one that impairs the quality and has become a serious obstacle for the cultivation of guava fruits. Keeping in view the significance of the problem, research was conducted to screen the different chemicals under in vitro for the management of the disease.

Custard apple (Sitaphal) is a yellowish green fruit of the family of plant species Annona. The postharvest system for these fruits is not yet adequately developed, and therefore several handling problems are still common. Rapid softening of fruits after harvest, especially during transportation and marketing is a major ongoing problem. The shelf-life of custard apple fruit can be enhanced upto 12 days in modified atmosphere storage at 10°C, whereas pulp can be stored for six months with potassium meta-bisulphite.

Many of the efforts for apple production rely on reducing the incidence of fungal diseases, and one of the main diseases is apple scab caused by the fungus Venturia inaequalis (Cooke) Wint. Apple scab is the most devastating important disease of cultivated apple causing economic losses in terms of fruit quality and yield in many apple growing areas.
